Liberal Democrat Leadership Election

Farron is the new leader

The MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, Tim Farron, has as expected become the leader of the Liberal Democrat Party this afternoon. He has been the favourite and widely considered to have been ahead from the start. The victory over Normal Lamb signals a shift to the left and more SDP than Liberal wing of the party and it will be interesting to see how that squares with the fact most of the Lib Dem target seats in 2020 are against the Conservatives rather than Labour, fighting on an agenda likely to appeal more to Labour voters when winning Tories back is the quicker way to re-build the party. It maybe Farron will be there for 10 years to play the longer game especially if there is a weak Labour opposition after they select their new leader.

Tim Farron 56.5% Norman Lamb 43.5%
