Soccer update – Queens of to a great start in the derby


Dumfries side triumph in derby opener.

Queen Of The South got their competitive season off to a winning start in the Scottish Challenge Cup winning the Dumfries and Galloway derby against Stranraer 2-0. The Doonhammers are a division above their local rivals and and took the lead on 20 minutes. From a corner that went too long, Andy Dowie headed it back across goal and Derek Lyle supplied the finish.

The home side dominated position and Stranraer did not manage a shot on target in the whole 90. Mark McGuigan came closest pulling his shot wide when one on one with Queens keeper Robbie Thompson. Ryan Conroy’s free kick in the dying moments doubled the lead to send Queen Of The South through to the third round.
