Women’s Super League

Sunderland began this weeks Women’s Super League programme by maintaining their great recent form. After putting four past Chelsea last week they did the same against Bristol Academy. In form Beth Mead scored another two to add to her hat-trick last week. Jade Boho Sayo levelled the score but after Mead had put the Black Cats in the lead. Steph Bannon restored the lead from close range and Emma Kelly struck from the edge of the box to make it 3-1. Mead’s second finished the scoring putting Sunderland top of the table ahead of Chelsea.

Liverpool were struggling with injuries including star player Fara Williams and it showed as they struggled against Birmingham who grabbed a vital three points. A penalty from Karen Carney just before half time. Birmingham could have had more with Liverpool keeper Libby Stout doing well to deny Jo Potter and Kirsty Linnett. The win moved Birmingham off the bottom ahead of Bristol Academy.

Arsenal moved into second place after coming behind to beat Notts County 2-1. County star Jess Clarke found the net yet again to give County the lead but Arsenal from then on dominated most of the game. Carly Telford made fine saves from Danielle Carter and Natalia before Carter finally equalised with a header. The hosts took the lead from a corner. Gemma Rose hot the bar before Spaniard Natalia headed in the rebound. County’s Ellen White was denied a late equaliser but Arsenal deserved their win.

Finally in the big game of the weekend Chelsea took on Manchester City at Staines. Toni Duggan gave Manchester City the lead with a fine finish after a through ball from Corboz. City were the better side throughout the first-half but Chelsea improved in the second and Eniola Aluko grabbed an equaliser. With the game looking like it was heading for a draw, City got a free-kick late in the game and a deflected strike from City and England captain Steph Houghton gave the visitors the three points to stop Chelsea going back top and closing the title race right up once again and with, maintaining City’s own challenge.
