Everton came from behind to survive a scare against Championship side Reading. Ola John crossed for Nick Blackman to give Reading the lead which they held and took into the break. Everton leveled just after the hour when Ross Barclay volleyed home after poor defending from a corner from the home side. Gerard Deulofeu won the game with a 25 yard free kick that Reading keeper Ali Al-Habsi will be disappointing not to have kept out. Romelu Lukaku could have added a third but twow as enough to see Everton into the last 16.
The two surprise packages of the Premier League season met at The King Power Stadium where Leciester needed extra time to see off West Ham. A close range effort from Joe Dodoo put the foxes ahead early on. The Hammers leveled on 27 minutes after Manuel Lanzini teed up Mauro Zarate to score from the edge of the box. Leicester had the better with Christian Fuchs and Andy King having chances to win it. It was King in extra time who sealed the victory with a header from a Fuchs cross with 5 minutes left. James Tomkins came close to forcing penalties with a header just wide but it’s Leicester who move on to the next round.
On Wednesday night another miserable display from Liverpool saw them require penalties to see of League 2 Carlisle United at Home. All seemed to be going well on 23 minutes after a spell of Liverpool dominance saw Adam Lellana cross for Danny Ings to head the home side into the lead. However Carlisle equalised with a low shot from Derek Asamoah. Liverpool had plenty of the ball but little creativity and a long range effort from Alex Gilliead was just wide and nearly saw the Cumbria side pull off the shock win. The game moved to penalties where young goalkeeper making his debut Adam Bogdan was the hero saving three penalties and sparing the reds blushes. The pressure will remain on Brendan Rodgers however, no win in normal time since beating Bournemouth in the 2nd game of the season is not a good position to be in.
