World Championship Boxing – 21st November

There four World Title fights at the weekend which included the crowning of a new British world champion. in Manchester Anthony Crolla, who was controversially denied in his first attempt after the fight was scored a draw when most though he had won, made no mistake on Saturday night. The fight had been fairly even between Crolla and WBA lightweight Champion Darleys Perez of Colombia. The fight ended after a perfect left hook to the body floored and knocked out the champion in the 5th round, leaving Crolla to celebrate achieving his dream on home turf.

ST Helens fighter Martin Murray failed in his bid to dethrone ‘King’ Arthur Abraham in Hannover. Murray controlled the early round but Abraham gradually worked his way back into the fight and while Germany is known for dubious decision, the split decision win for Abraham was in the case probably the right call, especially as Murray was docked a point for consistent infringements later in the fight as he began hang on. Abraham could be in line to face James Degale in a unification fight next.

In Las Vegas Mexican Saul Alvarez comprehensively beat former veteran champion Miguel Cotto with a comfortable and deserved unanimous points decision. Cotto fought a spiritied fight and went for the knockout at the end landing clean shots in the final round but it is Alvarez who moves on and could face Gennady Golovkin down the line in a unification fight. On the same card Francisco Vargas won the WBC Super Featherweight title by stoppage after scoring a knockdown against defending champion Tajashi Miura in the ninth round.
