South Africa V England – Test Match

Solid batting the key to England win

England strike first blood in their test series with South Africa after rock solid batting performances from Nick Compton, James Taylor and Johny Bairstow ensured sufficient runs on the board to build pressure that South Africa could not find a reply to. Compton top scored in the first innings with 81 assisted by Taylor with 70 and Bairstow 41 to put 303 on the board. Despite a fine 118 from Dean Elgar South Africa could only reply with 214 with Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali taking four wickets a piece to establish a solid first innings lead for the visitors.

Bairstow top scored in the second innings with 79 with Joe Root adding 72 and Compton 49 as England piled on 326 in the second innings leaving South Africa requiring a mammoth total to win. They got nowhere near as four wickets from Steven Finn tore the heart out of the South African batting and sealing a comfortable 241 run win

Afghanistan V Zimbabwe – ODI

Shahzad century sees the Afghans home

In an excellent game of cricket in Sharjah, UAE the Zimbabwe side batted first with Peter Moor getting the Africans off to a great start with a half century. This was followed up by a fine 73 from Craig Ervine to put a very respectable 253 for Afghanistan to chase. And chase it they did, mainly thanks to an excellent 131 not out by Mohammad Shahzad who led the run chase to perfection and found enough support to see the Afghans home with 14 balls to spare and take a 2-0 lead in the One Day series.
