Benteke goal enough for otherwise wasteful Liverpool

Despite wasting an array of chances yet again Liverpool managed to get the three points at Sunderland last night. Roberto Firmino had three chances in the first half, slipping at the wrong moment with the first, the second a superb long range effort the keeper touched onto the post and the third a clear cut headed with which he should have done much better.

The goal came within 23 seconds of the second half when Nathaniel Clyne’s through ball was deflected by Adam Lallana into the path of Christian Benteke who finished for his second goal in as many games. Benteke could have had a second being put clean through by Jordan Ibe only to have the shot saved. The Reds deserved the three points but it should have been much more comfortable. Liverpool are nine points behind top spot but the win puts them back in the mix for a European Cup place.
