Moon Soccer – Newport v Blackburn

FA Cup 3rd Round

Newport fail to take advantage of 10 man Blackburn

Newport County’s big 3rd round day which was delayed due to the weather ended in defeat against Blackburn Rovers at Rodney Parade. Blackburn struck first when Scott Barrow was adjudged to have brought down Ben Marshall and Marshall stepped up to slot home the penalty. Blackburn found themselves down to ten men after Chris Brown was sent off for a high challenge on Medy Elito.

Newport went in at half-time level after a fine spell after the sending off, with Matt Byrne equalising with a wonderful 25 yard strike and he played a part in the move that almost had them ahead with a cross which Connor Dymond got to with a looping header that hit the post. That was as good as it got though as they failed to make the extra man tell and Blackburn re-took the lead with 15 minutes left with Jordan Rhodes scoring with a flick header from Tom Lawrence’s cross. Newport goalkeeper Joe Day got sent off in the final minute for a professional foul to end the Newport challenge. Blackburn will face Oxford in round 4.
