Van Gerwin beats Chisnall after surviving last leg semi

Michael Van Gerwin took the first title of the 2016 season by defeating ST Helens’ Dave Chisnall 11-6 in the final. Van Gerwin got off to a great start racing into a 5-0 lead and although Chisnall steadied the ship a little later on there was no looking back as MVG went on to average 99 and retain a standard Chisnall on the day could not live with. It was still a good week for Chisnall but he could not repeat the comeback where he overcame an 8-0 deficit against Robert Thornton in the first round.

The Dutch star rode his luck earlier in the day after surviving an outstanding semi-final against Phil Taylor when Taylor has 6 darts to win the match and failed to take them in which both men averaged over 103, but Van Gerwin took full advantage to go on and dominate Chisnall to retain the Masters title he won last year and throw down a marker that he will be the one to beat for the rest of the season.
