South Africa v England – Game 1

Butler century aides England to victory

ENGLAND WIN BY 39 RUNS (ON DUCKWORTH-LEWIS) – ENGLAND LEAD THE SERIES 1-0

England showed batting strength in depth to comfortably beat South Africa in Bloemfontein. Batting first openers Jason Roy (48) and Alex Hales (52) got England off to a fast start which accelerated as Jos Butler came to the crease and hit 105 in just 76 balls including 5 sixes. He was further supported by Joe Root (52) and Ben Stokes (57) as England posted a mammoth 399. Chris Morris was the best of the South African bowlers with 3 wickets. A rain affected reply saw Quinton De Kock get a century scoring 138. The problem was South Africa were always behind the run rate. The rain changed the target to 290 off 33.3 overs and they got nowhere near it. Faf Du Plessis hit 55 and Moeen Ali took 3 wickets for England who restricted South Africa to 250-5 to take the game by 39 runs via Duckworth-Lewis and continue their strong test performance into the one day series by winning the first of 5 games.

New Zealand v Australia – Game 1

NEW ZEALAND WIN BY 159 RUNS – LEAD THE SERIES 1-0

Trent Boult and Matt Henry cruised through the Australian top order as New Zealand took first blood in their series with Australia. New Zealand batted first with a typically classy innings from Martin Guptill who hit 90 including five sixes. Henry Nichols supported with a 61 as New Zealand posted a target of 307-8 in their 50 overs. The reply got off to a dreadful start and Australia never recover. Boult and Henry took three wickets each leaving Australia on 41-6. Matthew Wade (37) and James Faulkner (36) put up some resistance but the Green and Golds were all out for 148. A huge win for New Zealand against the World one day Champions in a long awaited series. There are two more games to come.
