Martin Gould wins his first ranking title

Londoner Martin Gould took his first ranking title by defeating Belgian Luca Brecel in the German Masters Final in Berlin. Brecel was aiming to become the first European player outside of the UK and Ireland to win a ranking tournament but it was Gould who led at the end of the first session 5-3 and made a 110 break in the first frame of the finals session and then dominated the next to extend his lead to 7-3.

Gould had a chance in the next but missed a tricky pink. Brecel cleared with a 55 break to narrow the gap. The next two frames were shared and Brecel was left with a chance if he could drop a long red, but he missed and Gould stepped in to get the extra points required to seal the victory 9-5. Gould who was back in action after suffering with an ear infection will be hoping to take this form into TV tournaments going forward after also getting wins this week against Jud Trump and Graeme Dott on the way to the title.
