Milner Penalty pushes unconvincing Liverpool through

LIVERPOOL 1 AUGSBURG 0 – AGG 1-0

A James Milner Penalty saw Liverpool into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup on a nervy night at Anfield against German side Augsburg. The goal came on 4 minutes after Dominik Kohr was adjudged to have been guilty of a handball and Milner put the penalty confidently away.

Liverpool looked bright in their movement but could not find a second goal. Roberto Firmino forced a save from the German keeper Marwin Hitz, Phillipe Coutinho could not finish from eight yards after being set up by Daniel Sturridge and Sturridge hit the post as the Reds dominated the first half an hour..Liverpool almost paid for missing chances just before half time after Cauiby intercepted a back pass from Lucas Leiva but put the shot wide.

The second half saw few clear cut chances. Jordan Henderson latched onto a loose ball after good work from Firmino but but failed to get the ball past keeper Marwin Hitz. Tobias Werner had a great chance to win it on away goals for the German side late on but was denied by Simon Mignolet.

In the end relief at Anfield as Liverpool move through. Onwards for them to the League Cup Final against Manchester City on Sunday.

Burnley get deserved win as Forest frustrate again

BURNLEY 1 NOTTINGHAM FOREST 0

Nottingham Forest went down to defeat at Burnley as they fall further behind the play-off places. Burnley were in control and Forest had keeper Dorus De Vries to thank for going in at the break level as he made saves from Andre Grey and two efforts from David Jones.

Forest improved in the second half and they missed a golden chance to take the lead as Jamie Ward fired over the bar when he should have done better. Within a minute Burnley made the breakthrough, Steven Ward showed composure to set up Sam Vokes to score his 10th of the season.

Ward missed another chance five minutes from time as Burnley held out for the win. The defeat leaves Forest 12 points off the play off places with games running out. A late run for the chance for promotion is looking further away.

Butterfield gives Derby back to back wins for the first time in 2016

DERBY COUNTY 1 BLACKBURN ROVERS 0

Derby County remain in the play off places after victory against Blackburn. The early goal was scored by Jacob Butterfield with a fine finish from the edge of the area after poor Blackburn defending. Blackburn controlled the first half possession but did not create anything.

Butterfield could have made it two on the hour putting his effort wide and Tom Ince forced a good save from Jason Steele. Blackburn pushed forward in the latter stages. Steele himself had an effort wide coming up for a corner later on, and Jordi Gomez rattled the Derby bar in injury time.

Overall Derby probably just about deserved the win. Getting back to back league wins for the first time in 2016 and they remain in 6th place in a very tight fight for the play offs.

League 2

Boco Double as Magpies lose again

ACCRINGTON STANLEY 3 NOTTS COUNTY 2

Notts County went down to another defeat despite a late attempted comeback at Accrington Stanley. The home side were 2-0 up by half-time. Liam Noble could have had Notts ahead on 7 minutes putting a good chance wide.

They were punished as Billy Kee struck from range to gave Accrington the lead. Piero Mingola crossed for Rommy Boco to make it 2-0 with a header looped over Roy Carroll. He added his second in the second half as Mark Hughes put him in to make it three.

Notts staged a late rally, Curtis Thompson set up Ronan Murray to pull one back from 12 yards. Adam Campbell then gave County hope with a strike from the edge of the box after good work from Jason Banton. It was not enough however and Accrington claim a deserved win.

The win keeps Accrington fourth and in good shape for a play-off spot. The Magpies remain in a miserable 16th with little light at the end of the tunnel.
