1st Test Match – Sri Lanka v Australia
When Sri Lanka were skittled out for merely 117 with 3 wickets from Josh Hazelwood and Nathan Lyon, a victory for Sri Lanka looked unlikely. However they fought back restricting the Aussies to 203 with Adam Voges top scoring with 47 with 4 wickets each for Rangana Herath and Lakshan Sandakan keeping Sri Lanka in the game.
The key was a superb innings of 176 from Kusal Mendis. to give Australia a target of 267 to win. They never got close, Steven Smith’s 54 was the only resistance as the capitulated to the pitch where spin was increasingly winning the day. Herath took another 5 wickets and Sri Lanka sealed a hugely impressive 106 run win.
1st Test Match – Zimbabwe v New Zealand
New Zealand easily took the first match of the series in Bulawayo against Zimbabwe. The hosts position would have been worse had it not been for tailender Donald Tiripano’s 49 not out to at least put 161 on the board with Neil Wagner taking 6 wickets. A masterclass of batting leading to three centuries Ross Taylor 173 not out, BJ Watling 107 and Tom Latham 105 enabled New Zealand to end with 576 on the board. Sean Williams got an impressive 119 to try and keep the African side in the game but in the end 4 wickets for Trent Boult ensured they got nowhere near forcing New Zealand to bat again.
