Premier League – Leicester v Chelsea


Chelsea return to winning ways at the King Power

Chelsea moved seven points clear with a comfortable victory over Champions Leicester City depsite the abesnse of Diego Costa. Eden Hazard set up Marcos Alonso for the opener before half time and Alonso added a second after the break. A Pedro header sealed the points to complete a 3-0 win. Leicester were again looking a shadow of their Champion form last season as Chelsea brushed them aside with ease. Chelsea put the pressure on Liverpool and Manchester City tomorrow, Arsenal and Tottenham both also had wins today. As for Leicester they are five points clear of the drop zone but the performances will be worrying Claudio Ranieri

Championship – Leeds v Derby


Kiwi Wood sends Leeds third 

A header on the stroke of half time from Chris Wood gave Leeds the points against Derby County. Leeds dominated the first half and could have had the game out of sight before New Zealander Wood finally gave Leeds the lead heading home a corner. Derby improved in the second half after new signing David Nugent came on.Tom Ince was denied an equaliser but overall Leeds deserved their win the moved them up to third. Derby are just outside the play-off places as it stands.

Championship – Birmingham v Nottingham Forest

Forest draw

Away point for Forest in bore draw

In a game of almost no chances whatsoever Nottingham Forest have ended their run of defeats to claim a draw and only their second clean sheet of the season at a Birmingham side who themselves have no win in six games. The point is something for Forest fans who have been upset by the failure of a takeover attempt in recent days.Radio Nottingham commentator Colin Frey summed up the game as ‘Nothing Happened.’

League 2 – Notts County v Mansfield

Derby day draw

Notts County’s first game with Kevin Nolan in charge saw their rotten 10 match losing run end with a poor 0-0 draw in the Nottinghamshire Derby with Mansfield Town. The game had plenty of huff and puff but little quality. Yoann Arquin had the best chance to win it for Mansfield putting the ball wide when it was easier to score. Looking for the positives, the result keeps Mansfield’s unbeaten run of late going and is at least something to build on for the Magpies in what was overall a disappointing game.

League 2 – Cambridge v Blackpool


Ten men Blackpool hold out for a draw

Blackpool survived the final 15 minutes with ten men to claim a 0-0 draw at Cambridge. After a tight 75 minutes Tom Aldred was sent off as the hosts were awarded a penalty. However Luke Berry’s kick was saved by Sam Slocombe who also denied James Dunne and Berry again in injury time as the pressure built. Blackpool survived for what is a good point against a Cambridge side very much in the play off race.

League 2 – Newport v Colchester


First point in eight for Newport

Newport County got their first point in eight games with a 1-1 draw with Colchester United. Josh Sheehan’s deflected shot gave the Welsh side the lead but Chris Porter’s penalty pegged it back level before the break. Craig Reed could have won for Newport it with two chances in the second half. Newport still have a mountain to climb but today’s show against a good Colchester side is something to build on.

FA Trophy 2nd Round – Chester v Forest Green


Kelly double sees Chester go out

Chester City are out of the FA Trophy after facing a tough 2nd round draw against Forest Green Rovers. Two excellent Goals in either half from Marcus Kelly, one a long range 25 yard strike, saw Forest Green claim a comfortable and deserved 2-0 victory at the Diva Stadium.

FA Trophy 2nd Round – Tranmere v South Park

Tranmere progress with comfortable win over South park

Tranmere Rovers as expected easily progressed against Ishmaian Premier League side South Park at Prenton Park. First half goals from Ritchie Sutton, Jeff Hughes and Jake Kirby set the tone giving Rovers a 3-0 half time lead. A Kirean Lavery free kick gave South Park some hope in the second half but in injury time Cole Stockton added a fourth to give the scoreline a more accurate feel of what took place, seeing Tranmere into round 3.

FA Trophy 2nd Round – Southport v Wealdstone


Shock defeat for Southport as Wealdstone go through

Southport were disappointing going out of the FA Trophy in a shock loss by National League South side Wealdstone. Daniel Green gave the Londoners a surprise lead heading home a cross but Southport leveled early in the second half through Jake Wright. They did not kick on however and Wealdstone hit back with a 30 yard strike from Ricky Wellard. The visitors then sat back and defended well with Southport creating little in the final 15 minutes to hold out for the 2-1 win. For Southport it is back to the relegation battle and a chance to progress wasted.

Scottish Championship – Dundee United v Queen Of The South

Late comeback costs Queens all three points

Queen Of The South looked on course for an impressive away win at second place Dundee United until two late goals cost them in an entertaining 3-3 draw at Tannadice Park. Simon Murray gave the hosts the lead but a superb spell by the Doonhammers saw goals from Scott Dobbie, Joe Thomson and Dom Thomas put Queens in a 3-1 lead. But goals Scott Fraser and a late equaliser from Murray on 89 minutes cost Queens two valuable points and are a blow in their chase to get back into the play off picture.
