WBA Featherweight Title – Frampton v Santa Cruz


Third contest looms as Santa Cruz edges Frampton in rematch

Leo Santa Cruz regained the WBA Featherweight title edging out Carl Frampton in a tight contest. Santa Cruz changed his gameplan from his normal high volume style to a more patient approach establishing the jab and picking his punches using his reach advantage much better than in the first . The key was a strong finish in which for many Santa Cruz swept the final four rounds and it was enough to win a majority decision with two judges going his way by 2 points and the other scoring it a draw. With the two men having won one each, surely a third contest must be likely.

WBC Super Featherweight Title – Vargas v Berchelt


Berchelt power too much for Vargas

Miguel Berchelt became the new WBC Super Featherweight champion with a knockout of champion Francisco Vargas in a battle of two Mexicans. After a tight  first round. Berchelt took control in round two after flurries left Vargas reeling with blood coming from one eye. By round nine the champion was bleeding from both sides of his face as Berchelt’s power moved closer to claiming he title. The finish came in round 11 as Vargas’ cuts became worse and with 40 seconds left of the round the referee stopped the contest. Berchelt has now won his last 10 contests and finally has a World Title that he has been knocking on the door of claiming for some time.

WBC Lightweight Title – Zlaticannin v Garcia


Garcia claims title with brutal knockout

Unbeaten Mikey Garcia in his second fight since a long lay off became a three weight world champion after dismantling Montengro’s Dejan Zlaticannin in clinical and brutal fashion. Garcia was in total control from the start and it took just three rounds for Garcia to knockout his opponent, the punishment was so clear the referee did not even bother counting when the Champion went down. Talk of a super fight with Terrence Crawford is already emerging after this hugely impressive display to claim the WBC Lightweight Title.
