PDC WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

england

Rob Cross (England) 7

Phil Taylor (England) 2

At The Alexandra Palace, Harringay, London

There was no fairytale ending for Phil Taylor as he was crushed in his final ever match by Rob Cross, a 27 year old who had only been playing professionally for a year. Cross had beaten Michael Van Gerwin in an epic Semi Final but showed no signs of fatigue taking the first three sets before Taylor got on the board which included checkouts of 167 and 153.

Taylor had a chance to get back to 3-2 but missed a double 12 in the key leg and Cross punished it. Cross then blitzed through another two sets to go one away at 6-1.Taylor won the eighth set 3-0 but there was to be no comeback. Cross claimed the title with a 140 checkout which fittingly personified his entire performance.

Cross averaged over 107 and in some ways had done to Taylor what the Power has done to countless opponents over the years. Can Cross become the new long term face of darts? Who knows, but with young Jamie Lewis also reaching his first World Championship Semi Final along with the emergence of Cross, the long term future of Darts looks in good hands as the old master bows out.
