Players Championship Final Round 17 – K Anderson v Painter

australia

Kyle Anderson claimed a maiden title in the 17th Round of the Players Championship in Barnsley. He faced Kevin Painter in the final who was in his first main circuit tournament final for four years. Anderson began with a bang taking out 148 to break in the first leg and then went on to claim another break to take a 3-0 lead.

Anderson then held again and went one away from a whitewash missing the third dart in an attempt to take out another 148 but was able to return and hit double 14 with his next dart. Painter avoided a whitewash by finishing off an impressive 128 to put himself finally on the board. He held to make it 5-2 and prolong the contest but that was as far it it went as Anderson won the eighth leg to wrap up the 6-2 victory over The Artist.

It ended the perfect day for the Australian who earlier in the day hit a perfect nine dart finish in he last 16 in his win against Ronny Huybrechts.

Player Championship Final Round 18 – Chisnall v North

england

It was third time lucky in 2017 for Dave Chisnall who claimed his first tour title of 2017 in Round 18 of the Players Championship. Having lost two finals this year experience was the key as he faced Swindon’s Richard North. North had never been in a final before but showed few nerves as he moved into a 3-1 lead early on.

Chisnall broke back with a 107 checkout to make it 3-3 and then held twice more to move within one of the title at 5-4. North was not done however and took the match all the way with a brilliant 144 finish under pressure. North had a finish to win it but could not take out 155, allowing Chisnall in to hit double 10 for the victory.

The tour moves down under next for tournaments in Australia and New Zealand.

Premier League

Champions Leicester City became the first Premier League Champions to lose their opening game at Hull City. Hull took the lead through Adama Diomande on the stroke of half time. A Riyad Mahrez penalty leveled it up but Robert Snodgrass took advantage of some poor defend to give the Humberside outfit the perfect start and bring the champions down with a bump.

Meanwhile in Ronald Koeman’s opening game as Everton Manager the Toffeemen got off to a perfect start with Ross Barkley scoring within five minutes against Tottenham. The Lillywhites improved in the second half though and Erik Lamella got the equaliser just before the hour as it finished a point a piece.

Championship

Disappointment for both of the Moon’s Championship sides as both Forest and Derby went down to defeats. Forest went down in the Friday night game at Brighton, Anthony Knockaert giving the Seagulls a half time lead and two goals from Glenn Murray on loan from Bournemouth saw the Sussex side ease to a comfortable win. Derby were equally disappointing at Barnsley with Conor Hourihane’s shot from range rebounding off the post and then off keeper Ben Carson into the net. Hourihane was provider again for Craig Mawson to make it two and seal Barnsley’s first win back in the Championship.

League 2

Blackpool’s fine start to League two came to a halt at Morecambe. Brad Potts gave Blackpool the lead but a penalty from Jack Dunn just before half time turned the game. Morecambe dominated the second half and got the winner through Michael Rose finishing off a smart counter attack. Notts County finally got something to build on with a point at home against Stevenage. Ben Kennedy gave Stevenage an early lead to heap more misery on the Magpies but Jon Stead got an equaliser on 15 minutes and hit the post late on as County may have felt they should have won the game, but after a dismal start to the season, a point is at least a starting point to move forward.

Mansfield are in fifth place but were unlucky not to take all three points after a 1-1 draw against newly promoted Cheltenham Town. Mitch Rose gave the Stage a deserved lead Matt Green and Russell Griffiths missed further chances, but Cheltenham got an unlikely equaliser via a 30 yard strike from Finnish international Daniel O’Shaughnessy to earn an unlikely point. Newport County got an excellent win at Leyton Orient. Recovering from their last minute loss against Mansfield last week, the South Wales side earned a 1-0 win through a first half goal from Jamie Turley.

National League

Tranmere Rovers are top of the National League after making it three out of three with a 2-1 win against Eastleigh. Connor Jennings gave Rovers the lead but Adam Dugdale pounced on a loose ball to level the scores. James Norwood missed a penalty with 15 minutes to go but got a second chance in injury and put away his fourth goal of the season to maintain Rovers 100% record. Chester City could not back up their fine win against Dagenham & Redbridge going down 3-1 at the Diva Stadium to Maidstone. Anthony Acheampong put Maidstone ahead, James Alabi equalised before the break. Ben Greenhalge and Alex Flisher got the goals to seal it for Maidstone in the second half with Alabi getting himself sent off late to to complete Chester’s poor day.

Southport got themselves off the bottom of the table with their first win of the seaons, 2-1 at home to Woking. Dennon Lewis put Woking ahead on 13 minutes but Louis Almond had Southport level within six minutes. With two minutes to go Almond was brought down for a penalty and got up to stick it away himself to secure Southport’s first win of the season.

Scottish Championship

Queen Of The South continued their excellent start to the season demolishing Ayr United 4-1 at Palmerstone Park. Derek Lyle gave Queens the lead and Stephen Dobbie whose return from Blackpool appears to have added some extra professionalism to the side added a second before Half Time. Lyle added a second on 53 minutes, Kevin Nisbet got one back for Ayr but it was mere consolation as Lyndon Dykes, on eof the heroes of the Hibs League Cup win, completed the scoring.

Toffeemen fall to late penalty in seven goal thriller

After their late winner at Newcastle, Everton were today on the receiving end of a late winner at Goodison allowing Stoke to take the points. Xherden Shaqiri gave Stoke the lead but Romelu Lukaku equalised from close range before Shaquiri scored a spectacular volley which looped over Everton keeper Tim Howard to give Stoke the lead at half-time.

Everton started the better in the second half, Tom Cleverey set up Lukaku for his second and the Merseysiders took the lead after Gerard Deulofue tapped in to make it 3-2. At this point Everton were themselves looking good to make it rare back to back wins, but Stoke were not done. Joselu got his first Premier League goal with a volley to make it 3-3. and with seconds left, John Stones brought down Mark Anoutovic to concede a last minute penalty, which Anoutovic, the hero on Boxing Day for Stoke against Manchester United, did it again dispatching the penalty to win the game, Stoke move above Everton as a result.

League 1

Blackpool go down to defeat in South Yorkshire

Barnsley got their first home win since September with a day for their fans to remember with four goals against Blackpool. The home side took the lead with Sam Winnall heading in a Recce Wabara cross. A Mark Cullen strike leveled for Blackpool soon after the break but parity did not last long.

Winnall added a second from range to give Barnsley the lead back within two minutes and he then set up Marley Watkins to make it three. Andy Little gave Blackpool hope making it 3-2 in the 89th minute, but at the other end Ben Pearson set up Matthew Templeton in stoppage time to make it four and seal the points. Blackpool are 15th in the table and too close for comfort only two points outside the drop zone.

League 2

All Square at Field Mill

Mansfield Town fall outside the play off places after what they will consider a missed opportunity at home to York City. York took a surprise lead on 10 minutes when Dave Winfield converted a low cross from Luke Summerfield. Krystian Pearce headed the equaliser after a cross from Adam Chapman.

Mansfield dominated the second half with Pearce, Matt Green and Adi Yussuf all having chances to win it, but they could not make the breakthrough and the draw leaves Mansfield two points outside the play-off zone.

McLeod double earns Magpies a point

Notts County had to come from two goals down for the second home game in a row after a bright start from visitors Morecambe. Shaun Miller gave Morecambe the lead and Miller earned a penalty after been brought down by Thierry Audel. Kevin Ellison converted to give Morecambe a two goal advantage.

Izale Mcleod got one back just before after being set up be Graham Burke. Notts bossed the early stages of the second half and McLeod got his second with a header on 62 minutes. County put the pressure on and forced number of corners towards the end without unduly threatening a late winner. The draw leaves both sides firmly in mid table.

Plymouth go top after downing brave Newport

Plymouth Argyle are three points clear at the top of League 2 after coming from behind to beat a spirited Newport County. It was the Welsh side who were ahead at half-time after John Lenell-Lewis won a flick on putting Scott Boden clear who lobbed the keeper to give Newport the lead.

They really needed to keep hold of the lead but it only lasted three minutes into the second half when Oscar Threlkeld crossed for Jake Jervis to head Plymouth level from close range. Plymouth then took control and Ryan Brunt struck to win the game and take the Devon side top of the table tonight. Newport are four points outside the drop zone despite losing both Christmas fixtures.

National League

Poor Chester well beaten

Chester City were very disappointing going down to a 2-0 home defeat against Macclesfield Town. Chester defender Ian Sharps summed up Chester’s day after slicing Daniel Rowe’s cross from the left into his own net. Kristian Dennis got his second Christmas goal after scoring against Tranmere on Boxing Day, with a penalty after Ben Heneghan had brought him down. Chester remain stubbornly in mid table, and already appear to have very little to play for in 2016 barring a fantastic, or dreadful run.

Two xmas wins for Tranmere

Tranmere Rovers got their second win in a row this Christmas after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Altrincham at Prenton Park. James Norwood first half goal after being set up by Lois Maynard, was enough to give Tranmere the points. Norwood could have had more, and Scott Leather hit the post for Altrincham with six minutes left. Overall Tranmere deserved the win and move up to 8th, five points off the play-offs.

Storming Southport go seven unbeaten

After an incredibly miserable start to the season, Southport suddenly look a totally different team as of late as the notched up another win at home to Barrow. It was level at the break after Barrow’s Otis Khan’s struck after a surge from the left cancelling out Gary Jones opener for the home side. Southport’s winner came on 50 minutes when Michael Phenix set up Jamie Allen to give the Seasiders the lead and the points as they move up to 15th and the luxury of mid table obscurity.
