Premier League – Everton v West Bromwich Albion

Scneiderlin gerts first goal in comprehensive win for the Toffeemen

Everton closed the gap on Manchester United in sixth to just two points after demolishing West Brom at Goodison Park. Kevin Mirallas put Everton ahead from a rebound from Ross Barkley’s shot. Morgan Schneiderlin got his first goal for the club to make it 2-0 and Barkley provided again for Romelu Lukaku to complete the 3-0 scoreline. It continues Everton’s excellent form of late, especially at home.

Championship – Brighton & Hove Albion v Derby County

Brighton coast past the Rams

Promotion chasing Brighton comfortably dispatched Derby County in the Friday game. Anthony Knockeart had Brighton ahead in just five minutes and they dominated throughout. Sam Baldoch made it 2-0 just before half time and Glenn Murray added a third in the second half heading home a Knockeart cross. Matej Vydra hit the post in Derby’s only serious effort, but in the end they were well beaten as Brighton make up ground on Newcastle at the top.

Championship – Burton Albion v Nottingham Forest

Forest Lose

Nigel Clough gets victory over the club where he was famous

Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion scored their first ever win over Nottingham Forest which drags Forest back into the relegation fight. Cauley Woodrow’s free kick on 28 minutes proved to be the winning goal. Matty Cash wasted two great chances for Forest who a few weeks ago looked like they had done enough to survive but are now just two points clear of the drop zone. Burton leapfrog Forest in the table following the victory.

League 2 – Crewe Alexandra v Newport County

Newport get Flynn off to the perfect start

Newport’s caretaker boss Mike Flynn got victory in his first game as bottom side Newport won at Crewe. Callum Cooke’s free kick gave the hosts a deserved half time lead but the Welsh side fought back. Dan Butler’s volley leveled the scores and Joss Labadie got the winner with two minutes left on the clock. Too little too late for Newport? Probably, nut this win may just give them a slim chance and a big boost of confidence.

League 2 – Mansfield Town v Plymouth Argyle

Stags hopes hit after home defeat

Mansfield Town are two points outside the play offs after defeata t home to second placed Plymouth. Matt Greena nd Alex MacDonald had chances for the home side, but it was not to be as the Stags suffer a rare home loss.

League 2 – Notts County v Hartlepool United

Notts County’s improved home form continued with a 2-1 win against Hartlepool. Shola Ameobi got his firs for the club to give the Magpies the lead and in form Jorge Grant walloped home a second from just outside the box. Haydn Hollis unluckily put through his own net to give Hartlepool hope, but Notts saw out the game to earn another big three points as survival looks more and more likely.

League 2 – Wycombe Wanderers v Blackpool

All square at Adams Park

Blackpool are back in the play off hunt but missed a big chance to win the game at Wycombe. Brad Potts had a penalty saved by keeper Jamal Blackman in a game of few chances otherwise. The 0-0 draw means Blackpool are now only three points off the play off places after some good recent form. Today will feel like an opportunity missed however.

National League – Southport v Torquay United

Southport beaten in key relegation clash

Southport find themselves in even deeper trouble after a home defeat to fellow strugglers Torquay. Luke Young converted Daniel Sparkes cross to put the Devon outfit ahead. Jim Stevenson gave the Sandgrounders hope with an equaliser that went in off the left hand post. However as a draw was looking on the cards, Sparkes provided again with another cross which substitute Ruaine Keating heading home the winner leaving Southport rock bottom and now a full seven points away from safety.

FA Trophy Semi-Final 1st leg – Macclesfield Town v Tranmere Rovers

Advantage Rovers after 1st leg away draw

Tranmere Rovers came away from Macclesfield with a 1-1 draw that gives them a great chance to reach Wembley. Tranmere were ahead within a minutes as James Norwood was bundled over in the box and Jeff Hughes scored from the spot. Macclesfield controlled most of the rest of the game and finally got a reward as Ollie Norburt slotted into an empty net after the keeper came for a long ball but was beaten to it. The second leg will be at Prenton Park next Saturday to determine who will head down Wembley Way.

Scottish Championship – Morton v Queen Of The South

Queens beaten at Morton

Queen Of The South showed again the inconsistency that has put them out of the play off race with a poor display at Morton. Aiden Nesbitt should have put the home side ahead but volleyed over the bar. Ross Forbes got the only goal cutting inside from the right to score. Rickie Lammie also hit the bar as Morton could have had more than the eventual 1-0 scoreline which moves Morton above Dundee United into third.

Moon Of Liberty Soccer Round-up

Premier League

Champions Leicester City became the first Premier League Champions to lose their opening game at Hull City. Hull took the lead through Adama Diomande on the stroke of half time. A Riyad Mahrez penalty leveled it up but Robert Snodgrass took advantage of some poor defend to give the Humberside outfit the perfect start and bring the champions down with a bump.

Meanwhile in Ronald Koeman’s opening game as Everton Manager the Toffeemen got off to a perfect start with Ross Barkley scoring within five minutes against Tottenham. The Lillywhites improved in the second half though and Erik Lamella got the equaliser just before the hour as it finished a point a piece.

Disappointment for both of the Moon’s Championship sides as both Forest and Derby went down to defeats. Forest went down in the Friday night game at Brighton, Anthony Knockaert giving the Seagulls a half time lead and two goals from Glenn Murray on loan from Bournemouth saw the Sussex side ease to a comfortable win. Derby were equally disappointing at Barnsley with Conor Hourihane’s shot from range rebounding off the post and then off keeper Ben Carson into the net. Hourihane was provider again for Craig Mawson to make it two and seal Barnsley’s first win back in the Championship.

League 2

Blackpool’s fine start to League two came to a halt at Morecambe. Brad Potts gave Blackpool the lead but a penalty from Jack Dunn just before half time turned the game. Morecambe dominated the second half and got the winner through Michael Rose finishing off a smart counter attack. Notts County finally got something to build on with a point at home against Stevenage. Ben Kennedy gave Stevenage an early lead to heap more misery on the Magpies but Jon Stead got an equaliser on 15 minutes and hit the post late on as County may have felt they should have won the game, but after a dismal start to the season, a point is at least a starting point to move forward.

Mansfield are in fifth place but were unlucky not to take all three points after a 1-1 draw against newly promoted Cheltenham Town. Mitch Rose gave the Stage a deserved lead Matt Green and Russell Griffiths missed further chances, but Cheltenham got an unlikely equaliser via a 30 yard strike from Finnish international Daniel O’Shaughnessy to earn an unlikely point. Newport County got an excellent win at Leyton Orient. Recovering from their last minute loss against Mansfield last week, the South Wales side earned a 1-0 win through a first half goal from Jamie Turley.

National League

Tranmere Rovers are top of the National League after making it three out of three with a 2-1 win against Eastleigh. Connor Jennings gave Rovers the lead but Adam Dugdale pounced on a loose ball to level the scores. James Norwood missed a penalty with 15 minutes to go but got a second chance in injury and put away his fourth goal of the season to maintain Rovers 100% record. Chester City could not back up their fine win against Dagenham & Redbridge going down 3-1 at the Diva Stadium to Maidstone. Anthony Acheampong put Maidstone ahead, James Alabi equalised before the break. Ben Greenhalge and Alex Flisher got the goals to seal it for Maidstone in the second half with Alabi getting himself sent off late to to complete Chester’s poor day.

Southport got themselves off the bottom of the table with their first win of the seaons, 2-1 at home to Woking. Dennon Lewis put Woking ahead on 13 minutes but Louis Almond had Southport level within six minutes. With two minutes to go Almond was brought down for a penalty and got up to stick it away himself to secure Southport’s first win of the season.

Scottish Championship

Queen Of The South continued their excellent start to the season demolishing Ayr United 4-1 at Palmerstone Park. Derek Lyle gave Queens the lead and Stephen Dobbie whose return from Blackpool appears to have added some extra professionalism to the side added a second before Half Time. Lyle added a second on 53 minutes, Kevin Nisbet got one back for Ayr but it was mere consolation as Lyndon Dykes, on eof the heroes of the Hibs League Cup win, completed the scoring.
