9th March Local by Election round-up

This weeks seven by Elections continued the general trends we have seen. The Tories had a very good night on the whole, their gain from Labour in Waltham Cross, Broxbourne was the third week in a row they had made a gain from Labour. Victory in Derwent in Derby shows continued strength in a marginal area of North Derby and although the gain was technically from UKIP due to this being a rolling ward that elects 3 members over 3 years, Labour won the ward in 2015 & 2016 so was as god as another victory against Labour as well.

The Lib Dems got one excellent gain from the Tories in West Oxfordshire but there was not huge progress anywhere else, once again showing the limitations to their improvement. They are still polling well enough for a 20% plus projected share though on what was a decent night for them. The story is less rosy for UKIP and Labour for whom this weeks results will heap more misery continuing the string of poor results. UKIP’s share was down everywhere, Labour’s was down everywhere except Harrow, which shows again London is performing in a more positive way for Labour than everywhere else in the country.

This week sees the Tories UK projected share lead over Labour increase to 6%. UKIP are now below 7% and the Lib Dems are down a bit but still above 20% on 20.4%. All the most recent numbers can be found here.

Premier League – Leicester City v Hull City

Happyfox

Two wins in a row for Leicester

Leicester City have six points out of six this week after victory over fellow strugglers Hull City. Sam Clucas, who began his career with Leicester, opened the scoring for Hull on just six minutes but from there the Champions took over. Christian Fuchs leveled after good work from Jamie Vardy. Riyad Mahrez got his first goals since November from the edge of the box to put the Foxes ahead and and own goal from Tom Huddlestone completed the 3-1 win giving Leicester a five point buffer between themselves and the drop zone.

Premier League – Liverpool v Arsenal

happykop

Brilliant Liverpool sweep Arsenal aside

Liverpool recovered from midweek defeat with an excellent win against Arsenal at Anfield. The reds were two up at the break after a superb first half taking full advantage of Arsenal’s controversial call not to start Alexis Sanchez. Both the goals scored at the back post from low crosses, the first from Roberto Firmino and the second from Sadio Mane. Arsenal improved in the second half and Danny Welbeck got one back looping the ball over Simon Mignolet. Liverpool completed the win with a fast counter attack, Adam Lallana put Dicock away down the right and he crossed perfectly into the path of the on rushing Georginio Wijnaldum to score. The 3-1 win means Liverpool move up to third in the table and right back on the battle for the top four.

Championship – Derby County v Barnsley

Derby fightback for first win in seven

Derby County have their first win in seven games after first falling behind at Pride Park against Barnsley. After a goalless first half the visitors from Yorkshire took the lead as Matty James rose to head home a long throw. The lead lasted two minutes as Tom Ince struck after some poor defending. Ince then hit the post shortly after as Derby took control, the winner came through a deflected shot from David Nugent getting his first goal for the club. Derby move up to 10th after the victory but still 10 points away from the play offs which still look a long shot.

Championship – Nottingham Forest v Brighton & Hove Albion

Forest Win

Clough is back at Forest

Forest have a new hero after a stunning display to dispatch promotion chasing Brighton at the City Ground. All the goals came in the second half and the key man is a name synonymous with the club. The first goal was controversial as Zach Clough, no relation to those other famous Clough’s who have graced the club, shot and Brighton were convinced Britt Assombalonga got a touch from on offside position, the ref gave the goal and it was awarded to Clough for his first goal since moving from Bolton. Ben Osborn tapped in to seal the points and Forest were awarded a penalty in injury time, which Clough put away for his second. This is by far the most impressive display of the season, and despite their overall struggles, means they have beaten both of the top two at home this season having already beaten Newcastle.in December

League 2 – Blackpool v Morecambe

Potts shines as Blackpool win

Blackpool claimed their first home win since November beating Morecambe 3-1. Brad Potts crossed for Mark Cullen to give Blackpool the lead and after missing chances himself, Potts made it two being put through by Kelvin Mellor. Ryan Edwards put through his own net to make it 3-0, Anthony Evans consolation was the only blot on an excellent day for the Tangerines who close the gap on the play off place to seven points, it would need some run from here to make it however.

League 2 – Cheltenham Town v Mansfield Town

Mansfield draw a blank for the second time

Despite playing most of the game against 10 men, Mansfield could not force victory at Cheltenham. Kyle Storer was sent off on 18 minutes after a dreadful challenge on Jamie McGuire that got a deserved straight red card. Liam Davis hit the post direct from a corner for Cheltenham, while Ben Whiteman had tow excellent chances for Mansfield, both of which were put wide. Neither side had a shot on target and Mansfield have played out two 0-0 draws in a week. This will be considered two points dropped, and they are two points off the play off places.

League 2 – Newport County v Leyton Orient

Newport thrashed in key relegation showdown

In the battle of the bottom two Newport County were well beaten by Leyton Orient at Rodney Parade. Steven Alzate tapped in from Josh Komora’s cross to give the Londoners the lead. The Komora took over himself getting his first two goals for the club before half time to give Orient a 3-0 lead at the break. Orient got a penalty on 64 minutes which Komora dispatched to complete his hat trick. A 4-0 thrashing leaves Newport nine points off survival and looking at the National League barring a superb run from somewhere that you cannot see where it is coming from right now. Today may be the day in reality Newport got relegated.

League 2 – Stevenage v Notts County

Reality check for the Magpies

After the fantastic victory at Plymouth in midweek Notts County were brought back to earth at Stevenage. Mark Godden head home a Steven Schumacher cross on just six minutes. Steveange keeper made a great double save from Shola Ameobi and Jon Stead in Notts best chance of the game. Jack King doubled the lead on the hour before Godden got his 20th of the season finishing Ben Kennedy’s through ball to make it 3-0. Notts should now have enough points to survive, although wins today for Leyton Orient and Hartlepool will give cause for a little discomfort.

National League – Chester City v Tranmere Rovers

Rovers strengthen promotion hopes in five goal thriller

In the televised Friday night game between two of the Moon’s teams Tranmere came out on top over Chester in an excellent back and forth encounter/. The seals were ahead at half time through James Alabi’s penalty. Tranmere equalised on 55 minutes through a long range effort from jamie Harris but Chester regained the lead when Ryan Astles head home Ryan Lloyd’s corner. Evan Horwood leveled again with nine minutes left with a header from a Liam Ridehalgh cross.

It set the scene for a late winner for top scorer Andy Cook, who got the winner and his 18th of the season with a strike from just outside the box. Tranmere move up to second, just two points now behind leaders Lincoln. They should at least make the play offs, and may just be still in the running for the title and automatic promotion.

Time running out for Southport after big loss

Southport’s survival pospects took a huge hit after defeat at Maidstone. Ben McKenna headed Southport into an early lead but a double from Jamar Loza before the break gave the Kent side a 2-1 advantage. Jamie Allen’s neat volley gave the Sandgrounders hope but Maidstone dominated late on, goals from Joe Piggott and Kevin Lokko sealed a 4-2 win for Maidstone to help their survival hopes and push Southport bottom, six points away from safety. The table looks bleak for Southport, with time running out to turn it around.

Falkirk move second after win over Queens

Falkirk earned a deserved win at Queen Of The South whose play off hopes may now have been extinguished. A Lewis Kidd free kick just before half time put Falkirk ahead at the break. Luca Gasparotto and Luke Leahy had chances to add to the lead before Craig Sibbald doubled the lead from the penalty spot. A poor display from the Doonhammer’s that sums up the inconsistency that means they will likely fall short of a play off place despite undoubted talent. Falkirk in contrast move into second and will continue the chase of Hibs at the top.

Rams throw away a two goal lead

Derby County have suffered their first home league loss since September as they threw away a two goal lead against Cardiff City. Julien de Sart, on loan from Middlesbrough gave Derby the lead and Tom Ince set up Darren Bent to make it two within 17 minutes. Kadeem Harris got one back before the break and grabbed a second two minutes after the restart to equalise. David Nugent had a chance to win it for Derby but at the other end Alex Pearce gave away a penalty in injury time which Jor Ralls put away to gave Cardiff all three points. Stags share eight goals with Accrington

A late equaliser stretched Mansfield Town’s unbeaten run to eight in a hugely entertaining 4-4 draw against Accrington Stanley. The Stags defended poorly early on and goals from Omar Backles and Shay McCarten gave the Lancashire side a 2-0 lead in the first half hour. Rhys Bennett pulled one back scrambling the ball home after a corner was not cleared. Billy Kee scored the pick of the goals with a fine dipping strike from range t put Accrington 3-1 up but Mansfield hit back again just before the break through Hayden White’s header.

In form Shaq Coulthirst converted a penalty for Mansfield to level but Accrington had a penalty of their own within three minutes which Kee scored for his second of the night to make it 4-3. With moments left and Mansfield’s run looking in danger, White flicked the ball on for Frenchman Yoann Arquin to wallop home an injury time equaliser to complete an extraordinary game. Another point for solid Newport

Newport remain bottom but extended their unbeaten run to six games after another 0-0 draw this time against Grimsby Town. Newport created very little and the best chance came from Grimsby’s Danny Andrew who hit the post with a free kick. Barely a chance was created for either side in the second half which allows Newport to pick up another point. They are four away from safety but if they keep picking points up with Leyton Orient and Cheltenham both in poor current form, just maybe survival is still possible.

Magpies leave it late to salvage a draw

Two injury time goals earned Notts County an unlikely and priceless point against Exeter City at Meadow Lane. David Wheeler had given Exeter a first half lead and Notts came out in the second half with a very positive attitude Substitute Shola Ameobi had two great chances but was denied by Exeter keeper Christy Pym and Richard Duffy rattled the bar.

Jake Taylor was sent off with two minutes to go for Exeter but the 10 men responded with a goal through Ryan harley to make it 2-0 and appear to finish the game. But Notts kept pressing and got one back in injury time through a header from Duffy. It set up a grand stand finish in which Jorge Grant’s shot deflected into the net to complete an incredible comeback. The point puts Notts one point above Cheltenham and Leyton Orient and five above Newport County in the fight for Football league survival

Mane shows what the Reds have been missing

Sadio Mane was back on the scoresheet for the first time since returning from the African Nations Cup as Liverpool put a dent in Tottenham’s title hopes. Bristol City could have had more as Derby were not at the races. A header from Darren Bent pulled one back to give the home side hope and Tom Ince also headed home shortly after to make it 3-2. Ince was then fouled with nine minutes to go and Bent stepped up to equalise. Derby pressured for a winner without creating anything more but avoid an embarrassing home defeat. Any hopes Chester had of making a run for the play-offs were dealt a blow as they were comfortably beaten at Dover Athletic. The seals held their own in the first half, Ricky Miller gave Dover the lead with a penalty but Chester hit back through James Alabi. The game moved Dover’s way when Miller was put clean through to get his second and 29th goal of the season, from then on Dover were dominant. An excellent volley from Joe Healy sealed the points for a much needed win for Dover. Chester are sat bang in mid table as a result of the defeat.

League Leaders too good for the Doonhammers

Hibernian moved eight points clear at the top of the Scottish Championship dealing a blow to Queen Of The South’s play off hopes at Palmerstone Park. The 1-0 scoreline did not flatter the Edinburgh side who dominated throughout and were rarely troubled by the hosts. John McGinn’s deflected left foot volley provided the only goal but Hibs could have had more as the let a number of chances slip in the wet conditions and deserved the three points.

Premier League

In the early game Liverpool took the lead going into hafl-time with a penalty from James Milner. Despite being the better side throughout the second half Liverpool could not capitalise with Philipe Coutinho and Joel Matip going close and Sadio Mane having a goal ruled out for offside. Danny Rose met Eric Dyer’s cross to equalise for Spurs earning a point in the process. Liverpool will feel this is two points dropped, especially after the loss at Burnley.

Everton maintained their excellent start to the season with a 1-0 win at home to Stoke. The Potters keeper Shay Given was unlucky after pushing a Leighton Baines penalty onto the post only for it to rebound off his head into the net. Marko Aunautovic hit the post for Stoke late on but Everton held on to win. Champions Leicester City finally have a victory with goals from Jamie Vardy and Wes Morgan helping them to a 2-1 win against Swansea.Leon Fer headed in a late consolation for the Welsh side but Leicester are finally up and running.

Championship

In the Friday game Derby County were beaten in the derby against Burton Albion. The only goal came on 12 minutes with Jackson Irvine stooping to meet a Lewis Atkins cross.Substitute Abdoul Camara sparked a better showing in the second half for the Rams but Burton held out to grab a priceless win for Nigel Clough’s side. Nottingham Forest continue their fine home form with victory over Leeds United. Goals from Pajtim Kasami and Damien Perquis, both getting their first goals for the club, put Forest 2-0. Kalvin Philips free kick made it a nervy ending but any fears were finished off as Oliver Burke secured the points and a 3-1 win in injury time as Forest make it three wins out of three at home.

League 2

Blackpool’s recent slump continued with a 1-0 defeat against Plymouth. Blackpool had the better of it early on with Mark Cullen hitting the bar. Playmouth’s winner came in the second half with Graham Carey crossing from Naurus Bulvitis to head home. Jack Payne was sent off for the Seasiders with 20 minutes to go. All the goals came in the first half in an entertaining 2-2 draw between Newport County and Hartlepool. Nicky Featherstone had the side from County Durham ahead on two minutes but  Newport hit back straight away through a Sean Rigg penalty. A Joe Parkin volley put Hartlepool back ahead but they could not keep the lead going into half time with Padraig Amond equalising. The second half was a less inspiring affair as the game petered out to a 2-2 draw.

Mansfield Town are fifth after a come from behind win at Leyton Orient. Liam Kelly gave Orient the lead but the game turned on when Mitchell Rose leveled and Matt Green got the winner for Mansfield on 87 minutes after Rose had chested the ball down to him and Green, unmarked in the area made no mistake. Notts County also came from behind to win. All the goals were in the second half, Enzio Boldewijn gave Crawley Town the lead but James Collins put into his own net to level it up fot the Magpies. From that point Notts dominated, goals Adam Campbell and a third of the season from Jon Stead scoring from the penalty spot gave Notts their second win in a row.

National League

Two of the Moon’s teams met at Haig Avenue where Southport ended Tranmere Rovers perfect start to the season. Andy Cook got his second goal in two games to give the league leaders the lead but Louis Almonds’ cross beat everyone and went in at the far post. Southport had to endure plenty of pressure late on but held on for a well earned point.

Chester City had a fantastic day in the rain as they they thrashed Sutton United 4-0. Blaine Hudson and Ryan Lloyd had Chester 2-0 up in seven minutes. Sutton had the better of it in the middle period of the game but could not get themselves back in. A Tom Shaw penalty and a Kane Richards strike on the counter in injury time embellished the scoreline for Chester who have their first win in four games.

Scottish Championship

Queen Of The South remain unbeaten in the Scottish Championship with a 1-0 win at Dunfermline. The only goal came just before half time as Andy Dowie’s header set up Derek Lyle to score his 100th league goal for the Doonhammers. Jason Talbot was sent off for the home side in the second half. Queen Of The South move up to third in the table with the win and 10 points from their opening four games.

League Cup – Round 2

Both Liverpool and Everton eased through to round 3 of the League Cup. Liverpool picked a strong side and were 2-0 up by half time through Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino. An own goal from Tom Naylor and a brace from Daniel Sturridge completed a comfortable 5-0 win. Everton passage was similarly straight forward against Yeovil with Aaron Lennon, Ross Barkley and two from Arouna Kone seeing the Toffeemen through 4-0. Blackpool could not pull off a surprise at Crystal Palace with Scott Dann and Connor Wickham getting the goals in a deserved and straight forward 2-0 win for the London side.

The Moon’s two Championship sides were involved in much tighter affairs. Jamie Paterson gave Nottingham Forest the lead at Millwall but were pegged back in the second half by Sahun Williams lob from all of 50 yards with the Forest keeper off his line. The winner came with three minutes to go as Oliver Burke set up Lars Veldwijk to thump home the winner. There was also a dramatic end at Pride Park as Mike Jones injury time strike for Carlisle equalised Darren Bent’s opener. The game went to penalties with Scott Carson saving Carlisle’s 16th penalty with the score at 13-13. Slovenian Timi Max Elsnic was the hero stepping up to score the winning penalty.

In the Third Round draw two of the Moon’s sides will meet as Derby County will host Liverpool. Champions Leicester City join in Round 3 and will be at home to Chelsea. Forest will host Arsenal while Everton have been drawn at home to Norwich City.
