It continues Everton’s excellent form of late, especially at home.

Sam Baldoch made it 2-0 just before half time and Glenn Murray added a third in the second half heading home a Knockeart cross. Nigel Clough gets victory over the club where he was famous

Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion scored their first ever win over Nottingham Forest which drags Forest back into the relegation fight. Cauley Woodrow’s free kick on 28 minutes proved to be the winning goal. Newport’s caretaker boss Mike Flynn got victory in his first game as bottom side Newport won at Crewe. Callum Cooke’s free kick gave the hosts a deserved half time lead but the Welsh side fought back. Probably, nut this win may just give them a slim chance and a big boost of confidence.

Another home win for the Toffeemen

Everton are now unbeaten in nine after beating bottom side Sunderland 2-0 at Goodison Park. Idrissa Gueye converted Seamus Colema’s low cross for his first ever Everton goal. Chester further dents Derby’s play off hopes

Derby County are now 10 points off the play offs after a disappointing defeat at Aston Villa. The only goal came from James Chester’s header in the first half. Derby felt they should have had a penalty as Darren Bent went down in the box but it was not given. Andre Green hit a post for Villa, as they deserved the win. Villa did go down to 10 men in injury time as Leandro Bacuna was sent off, but it would not spoil Villa’s day as they claimed the points as Derby’s promotion chances continue to fade.

Forest earn an away point

Nottingham Forest had the best of the game but could not find a winner in a 0-0 stalemate at Wigan. The only chance on target in a poor first half came from Forest’s  Mustapha Carayol. Eric Lichaj curled a shot just wide and Carayol forced a good save from the Wigan keeper in the second half. After two heavy away defeats in their last two games Forest would probably have been happy to take a point and a solid display at the start of play, however they may feel they should have won it given how the match panned out.

Seasiders throw away another lead yet again

Blackpool have thrown away leads on a number of occasions and it happened again at Exeter. Blackpool took the lead on 19 minutes as Brad Potts shot was spilled and Colin Daniel scored from the rebound. Potts himself got a second but Exeter were back in it before the break with a close range effort from Ollie Watkins. Exeter pushed on but could not make the breakthrough, just as it looked as if Blackpool had the victory, Reuban Reid’s stooping header earned Exeter a point four minutes into injury time. Blackpool are in 15th seven points off the play offs, they may be challenging if it were not for the sort of late lapses costing them points we saw today.

Stags play off push continues

Two of the Moon’s sides met at Field Mill as Mansfield got another three points seeing off Newport at Field Mill. The bottom side took a surprise lead through Ryan Bird. Mansfield were level at the break as Krystian Pearce got the equaliser. Newport were left facing an uphill struggle as Jamaai Gordon was sent off and Mansfield took full advantage. Craig Reed’s handball allowed Shaq Coulthirst to slot home the penalty for his fourth goal since his loan move which won Mansfield the game. The loss leaves Newport six points adrift at the bottom and they need to turn it around very quickly if they are to avoid the Nation League next season.

League 2 – Notts County v Yeovil Town

No goals at Meadow Lane

Notts County have another point in their fight for survival in an uninspiring game at Meadow Lane against Yeovil Town. Jorge Grant had the best chance in the very first minute forcing a good save after being put through by Mark Yeates. Notts had more of the ball but overall did not do enough to win the game. Notts County are now five points away from the drop and while being a fair way from having the quality to compete at the top end, look to have enough to now survive comfortably.

Chester survived late pressure to take a 1-0 win at Southport whose relegation concerns deepen. Southport tried to fight back and were unlucky as both Liam Hynes and Jim Stevenson hit the woodwork late on. Southport are now three behind Maidstone and Woking with a worse goal difference. Their form needs to trun quickly if they want to remain in the National League. Chester remain in mid table.

Then Cole Stockton took control with two goals early in the second half to make it 3-1. Andy Mangan got a fourth Stockton completed his hat trick and the big 5-1 victory. The home side felt aggrieved to be denied a penalty in an incident involving Robert Huth, in a game short of chances. It is now two clean sheet in a row for Leicester, something to build on moving forward.

Hammer Comeback blow for Everton

EVERTON 2 WEST HAM UNITED 3

Everton’s 10 men could not hold on at Goodison Park against West Ham. Romelu Lukaku gave Everton the lead but Kevin Mirallas was sent off on the half hour.

Everton continued to push forward however and added a second in the second half through Aaron Lennon. Lukaku should have made it 3-0 but his penalty was saved.

West Ham then began the comeback as Everton tired.. Michail Antonio headed home a Mark Noble cross and Dimiti Payet played in Dafro Sakho to level at 2-2. Sakho returned the favour to set up payet in the final minute to complete the comeback.

The result move West Ham one point behind Manchester Untied. Everton remain in 11th.

Mahrez keeps the Foxes title chase on track

WATFORD 0 LEICESTER CITY 1

Leciester moved five points clear at the top after negotiating a tricky away trip at Watford. The home side had marginally the better of a poor first half. Troy Deeney came closest with a header just before half-time that was well save by Kasper Schmeichel.

Two substitutions at half time pushed Leicester forward. Riyad Mahrez got the key goal with a precision finish arrowing the ball between two defenders to score on 56 minutes. Mahrez pulled up with an injury shortly after and was taken off.

Watford had a series of corners and free kicks in the last few minutes. They never really tested Schmeichel however and Leicester keep their incredible run going. After Tottenham and Arsenal drew 2-2 earlier putting Leicester in a very strong position with just 9 games now left.

Russell and Martin help Derby pull away

DERBY COUNTY 2 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0

Derby appear back to form with a safe 2-0 win against Huddersfield. Tom Ince hit the post early as Derby took control in the first half.

The Rams got the lead through Chris Martin with a header from a Cyrus Christie cross. Jamie Patterson could have equalised but dragged his effort wide.

Tom Ince hit the woodwork again with a strike from range rattling the bar. The game was sealed thanks to a curling shot from Johnny Russell to make it two.

Derby remain fifth but now have a five point gap over those outside the play-off places. Huddersfield drop to 18th, seven clear of the relegation zone.

Fourth Straight defeat for Forest

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 0 IPSWICH TOWN 1

Nottingham Forest have now lost four in a row after defeat at the City Ground against Ipswich. Forest had the best chance of the first half with defender Matt Mills header hitting the bar.

The breakthrough for Ipswich came on 63 minutes. Kevin Foley set up Ben Pringle to score with a strike that went in off the post. Michael Mancienne put a header from a corner wide for Forest as they failed to test the Ipswich keeper late on.

Forest are 15th after another defeat. Thankfully for the reds they should have enough points on the board to keep them well clear of the drop zone, as their form would have them looking the wrong way at the moment.

League 1

Easy win for Millwall as Blackpool face the drop

MILLWALL 3 BLACKPOOL 0

Blackpool were well beaten at The Den as promotion chasing Millwall took all three points. Lee Gregroy’s header from a Carlos Edward’s cross gave the Londoners an early lead.

It was two before the break. a Jed Wallace direct free kick doubled Millwall’s lead. Blackpool’s day got worse with Hayden White being sent off on 76 minutes.

There was time for a third from the home side. Blackpool’s Tom Aldred was pulled up for a handball giving Millwall a late penalty. Steve Morison stepped up to put the ball beyond keeper Doyle to complete the scoring.

Millwall are in fifth after the win, Blackpool are two points away from safety and their position looks more precarious after this poor display.

League 2

Another home defeat for faltering Magpies

NOTTS COUNTY 0 BRISTOL ROVERS 2

Despite chances to fightback toothless Notts County fell to another home defeat at Meadow Lane against Bristol Rovers. Christian Castillo was a threat from the start for Rovers, putting an effort wide before bursting into the box to score from Matty Taylor’s through ball.

Wes Atkinson and Izale McLeod both had chances to level for Notts. As they pushed forward however they got caught on the break with Lee Brown finishing a move to seal the points for the Bristol side.

McLeod had an excellent chance to pull one back saved in the final minutes. Rovers maintain their play-off hopes in sixth, County are 17th, still well clear of the drop zone and with increasingly little to play for.

Boden seals three points for Newport

NEWPORT COUNTY 1 WYCOMBE WANDERERS 0

Newport hit Wycombe’s play off hopes with victory at Rodney Parade. Scott Boden got the key goal on 25 minutes, tapping in after good work from John-Christophe-Ayina.

Wycombe improved in the second half. Aaron Pierre forced a good save from Day in the Newport goal and Rowan Liburd hit the cross bar.

Conor Willkinson had a chance to add to Newport’s lead ten minutes from time and Pierre nearly forced a point in injury time for Wycombe.Newport held in the end for a win that probably ensures they are now safe in League 2.

Newport in the end deserved their win that moved them eleven points clear of the drop zone. Wycombe fall to ninth, a point outside the play-off zone.

Stags lose more ground after shock Yeovil win

MANSFIELD TOWN 0 YEOVIL TOWN 1

A late Yeovil goal has cost Mansfield Town more ground as their play-off hopes appear to be slipping away. Reggie Lambe had the best chance for Mansfield in an otherwise poor first half.

Lambe, Chris Clements and James Baxendale all missed chances in the second half as Mansfield took control but could not get the goal against the relegation strugglers from Somerset. They were to rue those missed chances

Moving into injury time Yeovil won it against the run of play. On the break Brandon Goodship was able to set up Ryan Dickson with a cross and Dickson scored with a low shot to take an unlikely win.

Yeovil’s win moves the eight clear of the drop zone to help their survival. Mansfield are down to 10th, two points away from the play off places having played a game more. This loss may be looked back on later as a key game in the season if Mansfield miss out.

National League

All square at the Deva Stadium

CHESTER CITY 1 BROMLEY 1

The mid table clash between Chester and Bromley ended all square. Chester took a first half lead as Danny O’Brien fed Ross Hannah to score his 16th goal of the season.

Hannah could have added a second, but for Bromley Moses Emmanuel could also have had them level with a good chance put wide. Emmanuel made amends in the second half lashing the ball home from six yards after being set up by Rob Swaine.

Bradley Goldberg could have won it for Bromley bringing a good save from Thompson. Hannah also could have added another before the end. A draw was a fair result as both sides remain in mid table with little excitement for both at either end of the table.

Injury time goal sees Southport beaten

SOUTHPORT 0 HALIFAX TOWN 1

Southport looked on course for a good point before an injury time strike saw Halifax take the three points. Both sides had chances in an even first half, Nicky Wroe had the visitors best chance while Adam Blakeman missed two good chances for Southport.

Southport began to control possession in the second half with Craig Westcarr and Paul Rutherford going close. However in injury time Halifax struck. After a melee in the Southport box, Shaquille McDonald volleyed a loose ball into the net from close range to win the match.

The win is much needed and moves Halifax out of the bottom four. Southport drop to 16th place, 7 points clear of the drop zone.

Norwood spot on again as Tranmere solidify play-off spot

TRANMERE ROVERS 3 GATESHEAD 1

After sealing victory with a penalty for Tranmere last week, James Norwood added two more in a 3-1 victory over Gateshead. The win means they are now five points clear of sixth place in the race for the play-offs.

Jon Shaw handled an Adam Mekki cross to give away the first penalty from which Norwood made it 1-0. Just before half time Mekki was brought down by James Curtis to allow Norwood to make it two.

Michael Higdon headed home a third in the second half from a Jake Kirby cross. Danny Johnson got a consolation for the visitors and with 12 minutes left, Norwood forced a great save to be denied a hat trick.

Gateshead are down to ninth with defeat being a blow to their play-off hopes. Although Dover have three games in hand, Tranmere have the points on the board on top of being in fine form themselves.
