Nigel Clough gets victory over the club where he was famous

Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion scored their first ever win over Nottingham Forest which drags Forest back into the relegation fight. Cauley Woodrow’s free kick on 28 minutes proved to be the winning goal. All square at Adams Park

Blackpool are back in the play off hunt but missed a big chance to win the game at Wycombe. Brad Potts had a penalty saved by keeper Jamal Blackman in a game of few chances otherwise. The 0-0 draw means Blackpool are now only three points off the play off places after some good recent form. Today will feel like an opportunity missed however.

Scottish Championship – Morton v Queen Of The South

Queens beaten at Morton

Queen Of The South showed again the inconsistency that has put them out of the play off race with a poor display at Morton. Aiden Nesbitt should have put the home side ahead but volleyed over the bar. Ross Forbes got the only goal cutting inside from the right to score. Rickie Lammie also hit the bar as Morton could have had more than the eventual 1-0 scoreline which moves Morton above Dundee United into third.

Moon of Liberty Saturday Soccer

Nottingham Forest opened their account with a ding dong 4-3 win over Burton Albion at the City Ground. Britt Assombalonga opened the scoring but Burton fought back with goals from Lucas Akins and Lloyd Dyer, but Thomas Lam scored on the stroke of half time and young talent Oliver Burke made it 3-2 in the second half before Assombalonga got his second. Tom Naylor made it a nervy end with a header to make it 4-3 but Forest hold on to get their opening day 3 points.

The excitement at the City Ground to now follow down the Brian Clough Way as Derby drew 0-0 with Brighton, the best chances fell to Tom Ince and Will Hughes but Derby could not find the breakthrough, two home points dropped on opening day for the Rams.

League 2

Blackpool who are hoping to put years of problems behind them got off to a great start at home to Exeter City in League 2. Kyle Vassell’s defleected shot gave Balckpool the lead and a Troy Brown own goal sealed the points. Notts County’s opening was less positive as they were well beaten at Yeovil due to first half goals from Kevin Dawson and Otis Khan enough to give the Somerset side a 2-0 win.

An excellent game between two of the Moon’s teams ended in Mansfield taking the points at Newport. Matt Green’s header for the Stage was canceled out by a Jack Compton Free kick. Danny Rose put Mansfield back ahead but a tap in from Joss Labadie made it 2-2 going into the final stages. The game was won with a Kevan Hurst strike from 20 yards in stoppage time to get Mansfield off to a flying start.

National League

Tranmere Rovers got their season off to a great start with a 2-0 away win at Bromley. A first half double from James Norwood was the difference. By contrast Southport were well beaten at Dagenham & Redbridge with goals for Fejiri Okenabirhie, Luke Guttidge & Jordan Maguire-Drew giving the Londoners a 3-0 win. Chester City also went down 3-0 at Gateshead whose goals all come in the second half, two goals from Wes York and a third from Manny Smith got the North-East outfit the points.

Scottish Championship

Queen Of the South came out with a creditable point against Dundee United. Mark Millar gave Queens a half time lead. A superb individual effort from Nick Van Der Velden saw the Dundee side draw level and they had the better of the latter stages but could not find a winner. An excellent point for the Doonhammers away at the favourite for promotion should give them plenty of confidence.
