League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg – Liverpool v Southampton

losekop

Liverpool crash out after dogged Saints display

Liverpool’s recent poor form continued falling to a second consecutive home defeat as Southampton reached the League Cup Final. Emre Can had Liverpool’s best effort which was clawed off the line but the Reds overall created little as Southampton defended well throughout. The Saints won the game in injury time with substitute Shane Long finishing off a counter attack to seal the tie and send the south coast club to Wembley. Liverpool now have just one win in seven games and notably only have the one win against League Two Plymouth since Sadio Mane went to the African Cup of Nations.

Leeds move up to third with win

Leeds United move up to third in the Championship with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Forest had the best chance of the first half through Britt Assombalonga forcing a fine save from Robert Greed. Leeds took control in the second half. A close range finish from Chris Wood, his 20th goal of the season gave Leeds the lead. Souleymane Doukara’s 20 yard volley sealed the points for the Yorkshiremen. For Forest who had improved in recent games, this was a step up in class too far for where the side is right now.

Forest draw

Away point for Forest in bore draw

In a game of almost no chances whatsoever Nottingham Forest have ended their run of defeats to claim a draw and only their second clean sheet of the season at a Birmingham side who themselves have no win in six games. The point is something for Forest fans who have been upset by the failure of a takeover attempt in recent days.Radio Nottingham commentator Colin Frey summed up the game as ‘Nothing Happened.’

League 2 – Notts County v Mansfield

Derby day draw

Notts County’s first game with Kevin Nolan in charge saw their rotten 10 match losing run end with a poor 0-0 draw in the Nottinghamshire Derby with Mansfield Town. The game had plenty of huff and puff but little quality. Yoann Arquin had the best chance to win it for Mansfield putting the ball wide when it was easier to score. Looking for the positives, the result keeps Mansfield’s unbeaten run of late going and is at least something to build on for the Magpies in what was overall a disappointing game.

Ten men Blackpool hold out for a draw

Blackpool survived the final 15 minutes with ten men to claim a 0-0 draw at Cambridge. After a tight 75 minutes Tom Aldred was sent off as the hosts were awarded a penalty. However Luke Berry’s kick was saved by Sam Slocombe who also denied James Dunne and Berry again in injury time as the pressure built. Blackpool survived for what is a good point against a Cambridge side very much in the play off race.

Shock defeat for Southport as Wealdstone go through

Southport were disappointing going out of the FA Trophy in a shock loss by National League South side Wealdstone. Daniel Green gave the Londoners a surprise lead heading home a cross but Southport leveled early in the second half through Jake Wright. They did not kick on however and Wealdstone hit back with a 30 yard strike from Ricky Wellard. The visitors then sat back and defended well with Southport creating little in the final 15 minutes to hold out for the 2-1 win. For Southport it is back to the relegation battle and a chance to progress wasted.

Scottish Championship – Dundee United v Queen Of The South

Late comeback costs Queens all three points

Queen Of The South looked on course for an impressive away win at second place Dundee United until two late goals cost them in an entertaining 3-3 draw at Tannadice Park. Simon Murray gave the hosts the lead but a superb spell by the Doonhammers saw goals from Scott Dobbie, Joe Thomson and Dom Thomas put Queens in a 3-1 lead. But goals Scott Fraser and a late equaliser from Murray on 89 minutes cost Queens two valuable points and are a blow in their chase to get back into the play off picture.

Premier League

In the early game Liverpool took the lead going into hafl-time with a penalty from James Milner. Despite being the better side throughout the second half Liverpool could not capitalise with Philipe Coutinho and Joel Matip going close and Sadio Mane having a goal ruled out for offside. Danny Rose met Eric Dyer’s cross to equalise for Spurs earning a point in the process. Liverpool will feel this is two points dropped, especially after the loss at Burnley.

Everton maintained their excellent start to the season with a 1-0 win at home to Stoke. The Potters keeper Shay Given was unlucky after pushing a Leighton Baines penalty onto the post only for it to rebound off his head into the net. Marko Aunautovic hit the post for Stoke late on but Everton held on to win. Champions Leicester City finally have a victory with goals from Jamie Vardy and Wes Morgan helping them to a 2-1 win against Swansea.Leon Fer headed in a late consolation for the Welsh side but Leicester are finally up and running.

Championship

In the Friday game Derby County were beaten in the derby against Burton Albion. The only goal came on 12 minutes with Jackson Irvine stooping to meet a Lewis Atkins cross.Substitute Abdoul Camara sparked a better showing in the second half for the Rams but Burton held out to grab a priceless win for Nigel Clough’s side. Nottingham Forest continue their fine home form with victory over Leeds United. Goals from Pajtim Kasami and Damien Perquis, both getting their first goals for the club, put Forest 2-0. Kalvin Philips free kick made it a nervy ending but any fears were finished off as Oliver Burke secured the points and a 3-1 win in injury time as Forest make it three wins out of three at home.

League 2

Blackpool’s recent slump continued with a 1-0 defeat against Plymouth. Blackpool had the better of it early on with Mark Cullen hitting the bar. Playmouth’s winner came in the second half with Graham Carey crossing from Naurus Bulvitis to head home. Jack Payne was sent off for the Seasiders with 20 minutes to go. All the goals came in the first half in an entertaining 2-2 draw between Newport County and Hartlepool. Nicky Featherstone had the side from County Durham ahead on two minutes but  Newport hit back straight away through a Sean Rigg penalty. A Joe Parkin volley put Hartlepool back ahead but they could not keep the lead going into half time with Padraig Amond equalising. The second half was a less inspiring affair as the game petered out to a 2-2 draw.

Mansfield Town are fifth after a come from behind win at Leyton Orient. Liam Kelly gave Orient the lead but the game turned on when Mitchell Rose leveled and Matt Green got the winner for Mansfield on 87 minutes after Rose had chested the ball down to him and Green, unmarked in the area made no mistake. Notts County also came from behind to win. All the goals were in the second half, Enzio Boldewijn gave Crawley Town the lead but James Collins put into his own net to level it up fot the Magpies. From that point Notts dominated, goals Adam Campbell and a third of the season from Jon Stead scoring from the penalty spot gave Notts their second win in a row.

National League

Two of the Moon’s teams met at Haig Avenue where Southport ended Tranmere Rovers perfect start to the season. Andy Cook got his second goal in two games to give the league leaders the lead but Louis Almonds’ cross beat everyone and went in at the far post. Southport had to endure plenty of pressure late on but held on for a well earned point.

Chester City had a fantastic day in the rain as they they thrashed Sutton United 4-0. Blaine Hudson and Ryan Lloyd had Chester 2-0 up in seven minutes. Sutton had the better of it in the middle period of the game but could not get themselves back in. A Tom Shaw penalty and a Kane Richards strike on the counter in injury time embellished the scoreline for Chester who have their first win in four games.

Scottish Championship

Queen Of The South remain unbeaten in the Scottish Championship with a 1-0 win at Dunfermline. The only goal came just before half time as Andy Dowie’s header set up Derek Lyle to score his 100th league goal for the Doonhammers. Jason Talbot was sent off for the home side in the second half. Queen Of The South move up to third in the table with the win and 10 points from their opening four games.
