Liverpool (1) 2 (Firmino, Salah)

West Bromwich Albion (3) 3 (Rodriguez 2, Matip OG)

AT ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL

Liverpool were dumped out of the FA Cup by West Brom at Anfield. The video referee played a big role in the game adding to an extraordinary contest. Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool the lead chipping the goalkeeper but Jay Rodriguez had equalised within a minute with a superb strike from the edge of the box.

West Brom than began cut cut Lverpool open again and again. The reds two full backs Alberto Moreno and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both who had come in for the cup game ahead of regulars Joe Gomez and Andrew Robertson, went missing time and again. Roderiguez got himself a second and West Brom thought they had made it 3-1 through Craig Dawson but the video referee adjudges it offside.

The video ref then intervened again to give Liverpool a penalty for a tug on Mohmmad Salah but Firmino missed it. West Brom took advantage and made it 3-1 just before half time as the cut Liverpool to pieces again and Joel Matip turned the ball into his own net. Liverpool pushed forward in the second half but created little as the full backs who were poor in defence in the first half wasted numerous crosses from both sides.

Salah did pull one back for Liverpool as the introduction of Danny Ings gave the reds more energy up front. But there was no equaliser as West Brom fully deserved their victory and short of a miracle in the European Cup, Liverpool will be three years under Jurgen Klopp with no trophy.

Villa did go down to 10 men in injury time as Leandro Bacuna was sent off, but it would not spoil Villa’s day as they claimed the points as Derby’s promotion chances continue to fade.

Championship – Wigan Athletic v Nottingham Forest

Forest draw

Forest earn an away point

Nottingham Forest had the best of the game but could not find a winner in a 0-0 stalemate at Wigan. The only chance on target in a poor first half came from Forest’s  Mustapha Carayol. Eric Lichaj curled a shot just wide and Carayol forced a good save from the Wigan keeper in the second half. After two heavy away defeats in their last two games Forest would probably have been happy to take a point and a solid display at the start of play, however they may feel they should have won it given how the match panned out.

Seasiders throw away another lead yet again

Blackpool have thrown away leads on a number of occasions and it happened again at Exeter. Blackpool took the lead on 19 minutes as Brad Potts shot was spilled and Colin Daniel scored from the rebound. Potts himself got a second but Exeter were back in it before the break with a close range effort from Ollie Watkins. Exeter pushed on but could not make the breakthrough, just as it looked as if Blackpool had the victory, Reuban Reid’s stooping header earned Exeter a point four minutes into injury time. Blackpool are in 15th seven points off the play offs, they may be challenging if it were not for the sort of late lapses costing them points we saw today.

Stags play off push continues

Two of the Moon’s sides met at Field Mill as Mansfield got another three points seeing off Newport at Field Mill. The bottom side took a surprise lead through Ryan Bird. Mansfield were level at the break as Krystian Pearce got the equaliser. Newport were left facing an uphill struggle as Jamaai Gordon was sent off and Mansfield took full advantage. Craig Reed’s handball allowed Shaq Coulthirst to slot home the penalty for his fourth goal since his loan move which won Mansfield the game. The loss leaves Newport six points adrift at the bottom and they need to turn it around very quickly if they are to avoid the Nation League next season.

League 2 – Notts County v Yeovil Town

No goals at Meadow Lane

Notts County have another point in their fight for survival in an uninspiring game at Meadow Lane against Yeovil Town. Jorge Grant had the best chance in the very first minute forcing a good save after being put through by Mark Yeates. Notts had more of the ball but overall did not do enough to win the game. Notts County are now five points away from the drop and while being a fair way from having the quality to compete at the top end, look to have enough to now survive comfortably.

Southport’s woes continue as Chester grab away win

Chester survived late pressure to take a 1-0 win at Southport whose relegation concerns deepen. Toms Shaw hit the post for Chester early on and they took a deserved lead in the second half through Evan Harwood who brilliantly lobbed the keeper to score. Southport tried to fight back and were unlucky as both Liam Hynes and Jim Stevenson hit the woodwork late on. Southport are now three behind Maidstone and Woking with a worse goal difference. Their form needs to trun quickly if they want to remain in the National League. Chester remain in mid table.

Rovers roar into the Semi Finals

Tranmere Rovers are a game away from Wembley after thrashing Barrow in today’s FA Trophy Quarter Final. Barrow briefly lead through Jordan William’s goal but from there Tranmere took total control with defender Michael Ihiekwe leveling before the break. Then Cole Stockton took control with two goals early in the second half to make it 3-1. Andy Mangan got a fourth Stockton completed his hat trick and the big 5-1 victory. Wembley is within reach and after a couple of poor home performances, this should bolster their promotion push as well.

Doonhammers keep slim play off hopes alive

Queen Of The South got a hugely needed win at home to Raith Rovers. They dominated the first half with goals from John Rankin and a close range effort from Derek Lyle putting the Dumfries side 2-0 at the break. Raith improved in the second half getting one back through Parisian John-Yves Mvoto. Ryan Hardie had a big chance to equalise late on but headed over the bar. The win mean Queen’s could move within five points of Falkirk if they win their game in hand in the race for the final play off spot.

Rams throw away a two goal lead

Derby County have suffered their first home league loss since September as they threw away a two goal lead against Cardiff City. Kadeem Harris got one back before the break and grabbed a second two minutes after the restart to equalise. Craig Noone then gave Cardiff a deserved lead but a Darren Bent header allowed Derby to strike back. David Nugent had a chance to win it for Derby but at the other end Alex Pearce gave away a penalty in injury time which Jor Ralls put away to gave Cardiff all three points. Derby are now eight points off the play off places after recent stutters and have conceded seven goals in their last two home games.

Forest Lose

Another away defeat for Forest

Despite an excellent start Nottingham Forest went down to a second away defeat in three days losing 3-2 at Fulham. Pajtim Kasami’s volley had Forest ahead in two minutes as the reds looked dangerous early on. Fulham turned it around with two goals in three minutes from Tom Cairney and Lucas Piazon. Young star Ben Brereton headed Forest level shortly after the break but Jack Hobbs put through his own net on 72 minutes which proved to be the winning goal for Fulham who are six points off the play offs but still very much in the race. Forest remain in 17th place in the Championship.

League 2 – Mansfield Town v Accrington Stanley

Stags share eight goals with Accrington

A late equaliser stretched Mansfield Town’s unbeaten run to eight in a hugely entertaining 4-4 draw against Accrington Stanley. The Stags defended poorly early on and goals from Omar Backles and Shay McCarten gave the Lancashire side a 2-0 lead in the first half hour. Rhys Bennett pulled one back scrambling the ball home after a corner was not cleared. Billy Kee scored the pick of the goals with a fine dipping strike from range t put Accrington 3-1 up but Mansfield hit back again just before the break through Hayden White’s header.

In form Shaq Coulthirst converted a penalty for Mansfield to level but Accrington had a penalty of their own within three minutes which Kee scored for his second of the night to make it 4-3. With moments left and Mansfield’s run looking in danger, White flicked the ball on for Frenchman Yoann Arquin to wallop home an injury time equaliser to complete an extraordinary game. Mansfield remain in the play off places as a result of the point.

Another point for solid Newport

Newport remain bottom but extended their unbeaten run to six games after another 0-0 draw this time against Grimsby Town. Newport created very little and the best chance came from Grimsby’s Danny Andrew who hit the post with a free kick. Barely a chance was created for either side in the second half which allows Newport to pick up another point. They are four away from safety but if they keep picking points up with Leyton Orient and Cheltenham both in poor current form, just maybe survival is still possible.

League 2 – Notts County v Exeter City

Magpies leave it late to salvage a draw

Two injury time goals earned Notts County an unlikely and priceless point against Exeter City at Meadow Lane. David Wheeler had given Exeter a first half lead and Notts came out in the second half with a very positive attitude Substitute Shola Ameobi had two great chances but was denied by Exeter keeper Christy Pym and Richard Duffy rattled the bar.

Jake Taylor was sent off with two minutes to go for Exeter but the 10 men responded with a goal through Ryan harley to make it 2-0 and appear to finish the game. But Notts kept pressing and got one back in injury time through a header from Duffy. It set up a grand stand finish in which Jorge Grant’s shot deflected into the net to complete an incredible comeback. The point puts Notts one point above Cheltenham and Leyton Orient and five above Newport County in the fight for Football league survival
