Promotion chasing Brighton comfortably dispatched Derby County in the Friday game. Anthony Knockeart had Brighton ahead in just five minutes and they dominated throughout. Sam Baldoch made it 2-0 just before half time and Glenn Murray added a third in the second half heading home a Knockeart cross. Matej Vydra hit the post in Derby’s only serious effort, but in the end they were well beaten as Brighton make up ground on Newcastle at the top.

Nigel Clough gets victory over the club where he was famous

Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion scored their first ever win over Nottingham Forest which drags Forest back into the relegation fight. Cauley Woodrow’s free kick on 28 minutes proved to be the winning goal. Burton leapfrog Forest in the table following the victory.

Callum Cooke’s free kick gave the hosts a deserved half time lead but the Welsh side fought back. Probably, nut this win may just give them a slim chance and a big boost of confidence.

Another home win for the Toffeemen

Everton are now unbeaten in nine after beating bottom side Sunderland 2-0 at Goodison Park. Idrissa Gueye converted Seamus Colema’s low cross for his first ever Everton goal. Chester further dents Derby’s play off hopes

Derby County are now 10 points off the play offs after a disappointing defeat at Aston Villa. The only goal came from James Chester’s header in the first half. Derby felt they should have had a penalty as Darren Bent went down in the box but it was not given. Andre Green hit a post for Villa, as they deserved the win. Villa did go down to 10 men in injury time as Leandro Bacuna was sent off, but it would not spoil Villa’s day as they claimed the points as Derby’s promotion chances continue to fade.

Forest earn an away point

Nottingham Forest had the best of the game but could not find a winner in a 0-0 stalemate at Wigan. The only chance on target in a poor first half came from Forest’s  Mustapha Carayol. Eric Lichaj curled a shot just wide and Carayol forced a good save from the Wigan keeper in the second half. After two heavy away defeats in their last two games Forest would probably have been happy to take a point and a solid display at the start of play, however they may feel they should have won it given how the match panned out.

Seasiders throw away another lead yet again

Blackpool have thrown away leads on a number of occasions and it happened again at Exeter. Blackpool took the lead on 19 minutes as Brad Potts shot was spilled and Colin Daniel scored from the rebound. Potts himself got a second but Exeter were back in it before the break with a close range effort from Ollie Watkins. Exeter pushed on but could not make the breakthrough, just as it looked as if Blackpool had the victory, Reuban Reid’s stooping header earned Exeter a point four minutes into injury time. Blackpool are in 15th seven points off the play offs, they may be challenging if it were not for the sort of late lapses costing them points we saw today.

Two of the Moon’s sides met at Field Mill as Mansfield got another three points seeing off Newport at Field Mill. The bottom side took a surprise lead through Ryan Bird. Craig Reed’s handball allowed Shaq Coulthirst to slot home the penalty for his fourth goal since his loan move which won Mansfield the game. The loss leaves Newport six points adrift at the bottom and they need to turn it around very quickly if they are to avoid the Nation League next season.

Southport tried to fight back and were unlucky as both Liam Hynes and Jim Stevenson hit the woodwork late on. Southport are now three behind Maidstone and Woking with a worse goal difference. Then Cole Stockton took control with two goals early in the second half to make it 3-1. Andy Mangan got a fourth Stockton completed his hat trick and the big 5-1 victory. A late equaliser stretched Mansfield Town’s unbeaten run to eight in a hugely entertaining 4-4 draw against Accrington Stanley. Rhys Bennett pulled one back scrambling the ball home after a corner was not cleared. Billy Kee scored the pick of the goals with a fine dipping strike from range t put Accrington 3-1 up but Mansfield hit back again just before the break through Hayden White’s header.

Newport remain bottom but extended their unbeaten run to six games after another 0-0 draw this time against Grimsby Town. Jake Taylor was sent off with two minutes to go for Exeter but the 10 men responded with a goal through Ryan harley to make it 2-0 and appear to finish the game. But Notts kept pressing and got one back in injury time through a header from Duffy. It set up a grand stand finish in which Jorge Grant’s shot deflected into the net to complete an incredible comeback. Unhappy return to Ewood for Gary Bowyer

Gary Bowyer’s return to Ewood Park ended in defeat as Championship Blackburn eased passed his Blackpool side. The game had low attendance due to both sides fans protesting against their respective owners. Sam Gallagher and Eliott Bennett got the goals while Tom Aldred had a header disallowed for Blackpool. Kevin Mellor was sent off in the second half leaving Blackpool with an impossible task, and so it proved. Blackpool’s brave cup run is over and it is Blackburn who go into the round 5 draw.

Forte’s late strike takes the Magpies out of the drop zone

Notts County have their first league win since October and first victory in 14 games after the goals came late against Crawley Town at Meadow Lane. After a very tight first half, County were not helped on 72 minutes after Curtis Thompson was sent off for the home side. However Notts responded magnificently as Thierry Audel gave the 10 men the lead. With six minutes left it looked like the chance had been blown as James Collins equalised. However today the Magpies were not done as Jonathan Forte struck from 12 yards in injury time to hand the home side all three points. The win takes County out of the relegation zone. This after the 0-0 draw with Mansfield, may point to Notts being able to find some home form, which in turn could be the difference in ensuring safety,

Derby day draw

Notts County’s first game with Kevin Nolan in charge saw their rotten 10 match losing run end with a poor 0-0 draw in the Nottinghamshire Derby with Mansfield Town. The game had plenty of huff and puff but little quality. Yoann Arquin had the best chance to win it for Mansfield putting the ball wide when it was easier to score. Looking for the positives, the result keeps Mansfield’s unbeaten run of late going and is at least something to build on for the Magpies in what was overall a disappointing game.
