Super League Round 1

Early McIlorum tries get Warriors off to a winning start

Wigan got off to a winning start thanks to two early tries on a miserable night at the DW Stadium. Michael McIlorum got the first try early on as Catalan failed to get to grips with the conditions and spilled the ball right on their own try line allowing McIllorum to take advantage and get the first score. He then got a second supporting a break from George Williams to add to the lead. Matty Smith added a conversion and a penalty to give Wigan a 12-0 lead. Justin Horo went over for the French side converted by former Wigan man Pat Richards who was making his debut for Catalan. However Wigan held out for the victory to start the season on a positive note.

Defending champions Leeds were beaten by Warrington on Thursday opening the Super League with a try from Kevin Penny the difference for the Wolves. Two tries from Mark Percival and 10 points from the boot of Luke Walsh helped ST Helens easily beat Huddersfield. Hull scored eight tries in a 42-20 thrashing of Salford. Setaimata Sa scored twice to held Widnes Vikings to an opening day win over Wakefield. Finally Hull KR and Castleford shared the spoils fighting to a stalemate 16-16 draw.
