It continues Everton’s excellent form of late, especially at home.

Sam Baldoch made it 2-0 just before half time and Glenn Murray added a third in the second half heading home a Knockeart cross. Matej Vydra hit the post in Derby’s only serious effort, but in the end they were well beaten as Brighton make up ground on Newcastle at the top.

Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion scored their first ever win over Nottingham Forest which drags Forest back into the relegation fight. Cauley Woodrow’s free kick on 28 minutes proved to be the winning goal. Burton leapfrog Forest in the table following the victory.

Callum Cooke’s free kick gave the hosts a deserved half time lead but the Welsh side fought back. Blackpool are back in the play off hunt but missed a big chance to win the game at Wycombe. Brad Potts had a penalty saved by keeper Jamal Blackman in a game of few chances otherwise. Southport beaten in key relegation clash

Southport find themselves in even deeper trouble after a home defeat to fellow strugglers Torquay. Luke Young converted Daniel Sparkes cross to put the Devon outfit ahead. Advantage Rovers after 1st leg away draw

Tranmere Rovers came away from Macclesfield with a 1-1 draw that gives them a great chance to reach Wembley. Tranmere were ahead within a minutes as James Norwood was bundled over in the box and Jeff Hughes scored from the spot. Macclesfield controlled most of the rest of the game and finally got a reward as Ollie Norburt slotted into an empty net after the keeper came for a long ball but was beaten to it. The second leg will be at Prenton Park next Saturday to determine who will head down Wembley Way.

Report (Liverpool Echo)

Scottish Championship – Morton v Queen Of The South

queen-lose

Queens beaten at Morton

Queen Of The South showed again the inconsistency that has put them out of the play off race with a poor display at Morton. Aiden Nesbitt should have put the home side ahead but volleyed over the bar. Ross Forbes got the only goal cutting inside from the right to score. Rickie Lammie also hit the bar as Morton could have had more than the eventual 1-0 scoreline which moves Morton above Dundee United into third.

Premier League

Everton fought back from one down to earn an away win at West Brom. Gareth McAuley headed home a corner to give West Brom an early lead but Everton turned the game just before half-time with a Kevin Mirallas equaliser. The winner came on the hour from Gareth Barry who forced the ball home after West Brom failed to clear a corner. Everton are currently in fifth after the win.

Liverpool could not build on their impressive win at Arsenal being beaten 2-0 at Burnley. Andre Gray set up Sam Vokes to give Burnely the lead within two minutes and Gray rolled home the second as Liverpool never got going and despite a huge amount of possession, failed to use it in a disappointing display.

In the late game between the Champions and Runners-up from last season, Arsenal had the better of the chances but Leicester City felt they were denied a penalty when Danny Drinkwater went down. Neither side could find the breakthrough as it ended 0-0 and a point each.

Championship

Nottingham Forest won a second home game in a row 4-3 after a dramatic injury time winner against Wigan. Britt Assombalonga put Forest ahead which was equalised by Michael Jacobs. Oliver Burke brought the Reds back ahead before the break but Will Grigg caught fire to score twice to threaten to take a point scoring either side of Burke’s second making it 3-3 going into the last five minutes. Thomas Lam got hos second Forest goal in the 93rd minute to give Forest all three points. Forest have won all their home games and lost all their away games so far.The excitement did not extend to Pride Park as Derby County fought out a 0-0 stalemate at home to Aston Villa. Villa hit the woodwork twice and were the better side in the first half, the game then petered out in a poor second half.

League 2

Mansfield Town’s impressive start to the season came to a halt at Plymouth. Two goals in five minutes from Graham Carey eased the Devon side to a 2-0 win. Blackpool drew a blank at Bloomfield Road with a 0-0 draw against Wycombe. Jim McAllister had the best chance with seven minutes to go. Newport got a late point at home to Crewe with Sean Rigg’s header on 83 minutes cancelling out Alex Kiwomya’s first half strike in a 1-1 draw.

Notts County got their first win of the season with a comeback victory at Hartlepool. Toto Nsiala gave the home side the lead at the break and County were looking down the barrel at a third defeat in four games. Louis Laing leveled in the second half and Jon Stead hit the woodwork in a much better second half display. It was Stead who was to be the hero with a calm turn and shot into the corner on 76 minutes to see the Magpies take home all three points.

National League

Tranmere Rovers made it five out of five with a 2-1 win at home to Maidstone. Andy Cook gave Rovers the lead but against the run of play Alex Flisher got his second of the season to level for Maidstone. James Norwood hit the woodwork but the hero was Steve McNulty who bundled in the winner after a goalmouth scramble. Chester City earner a point at Boreham Wood. Morgan Ferrier gave the Hertfordshire side the lead but Eliott Durrell lobbed the keeper from range seven minutes from time to equalise. Southport endured a painful day at Lincoln, Johnny Margetts got all four goals for the home side as the Sangrounders were thrashed 4-0 with Ashley Grimes sent off for Southport to add to their miserable afternoon.

Scottish Championship

Queen Of The South are third after making it seven from nine points with a comfortable and deserved 2-0 win over Falkirk. Stephen Dobbie scored both, a well executed curling shot in the first half and adding a second from a rebound after a Lyndon Dykes shot was parried. The Doonhammers are looking a much improved outfit with Dobbie, who has returned to Dumfries after a spell with Blackpool, back in the side.

Premier League

An injury time deflection saved Liverpool from a home defeat against West Brom on Sunday. Returning captain Jordan Henderson gave Liverpool a good start finishing a sweeping passing move to give the reds the lead. The Reds defensive problems re-appeared on the half hour though when Carig Dawson pounced on Simon Mignolet’s error to equalise. Jonas Olsson though he had put West Brom ahead before half time after more poor defending from a corner but he was adjudged offside. Olsson got his goal in the second half from a header after Chris Brunt crossed after Liverpool failed yet again to clear a corner. Heading for defeat, Divok Origi’s long range shot deflected into the net to save Liverpool a point.

In the Monday night game the foxes march on putting Chelsea to the sword at the King Power. The deadly duo of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez struck again as Mahrez set up Vardy for the first. It was Mahrez individual brilliance beating his man and curling a superb strike into the net to make it two. Chelsea then threw everything forward moving to a 3-4-3 formation. Loic Remy got one back with a header from a Pedro cross, but with an electric atmosphere and the Leicester crowd willing them on, Leicester held out and indeed came closest to another when Marc Albrighton shot just wide. Leicester are back at the top of the table, their extraordinary season continues.

Championship

Derby County are now only two points off the top spot after sweeping aside Bristol City with help from an outstanding performance from Tom Ince. Before the game he had not scored in nine but gave the Rams the lead after running at the heart of the Bristol defence and finding the net with a low shot. The second was a bit of fortune after a speculative shot slid under keeper Frankie Fielding which he really should have saved. Ince combined with Darren Bent to get his hat-trick and Johnny Russell added a fourth for good measure, with other results going their way, Derby close the gap at the top and are looking good going into the Christmas period.

League 2

A fine performance from Adam Campbell helped 10 men Notts County to a creditable away draw at Wycombe. Jons Stead gave Notts the lead after Campbell was brought down for a penalty. Liam Noble was sent off on 38 minutes for violent conduct after a clash with Luke O’Nein. Wycombe were level within five minutes of the sending off when Paul Hayes crossed for Michael Harriman to even the score. Notts were not done and the excellent Cambell steered in Rob Milsom’s cross to give the Magpies the lead again, they could not hold out however, with a header from Aaron Amadi-Holloway ensuring both sides left with a point. Notts are four points off the play offs and may see this as a missed opportunity to take full advantage of their game in hand.
