In Adler, Russia

Murat Gassiev earned the right to take on Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk in the Super Series final after winning a battle of two undefeated fighters against Cuba’s Yunier Dorticus. It was good fight with Dorticus seemingly in control of the first four rounds. Gassiev had the Russian crowd on their feet in the fifth as he got through with his first meaningful shots of the contest.

A back and fourth fight continued with both men landing great shots throughout. Gassiev shook Dorticus in the tenth with an uppercut and from there Gassiev began to take control. The Russian won the eleventh and then finally had Dorticus down in the Final round. Dorticus tried to hang on to the end but Gassiev’s power got through, flooring the Cuban twice more before the fight was called to a halt. As it proved Gassiev was narrowly ahead on all three scorecards so would have got the decision without the stoppage. Gassiev and Usyk will now fight to unify all four titles, something very rarely seen in modern boxing.

In Corpus Christi, Texas

Gilberto Ramirez of Mexico made a successful 4th defence of his Super Middleweight title with an easy night’s work against Habib Ahmed of Ghana in Texas. Ramirez won every round of the fight in what many considered a mismatch. Ahmed was overpowered and a flurry of combinations in Round 6 led the Ahmed corner to stop the fight. Ramirez moves to 37-0 with the win and bigger tests will await.

On the same card rising new Filipino star Jerwin Ancajas retained his Super Flyweight title for the fourth time against Mexican Israel Gonzalez. Ancajas making his debut in the USA started fast with a first round knockdown. Gonzalez gave it a real go in the fifth deciding to try and come forward but by the end of the round Ancajas was still in total control. Ancajas finally finished it off with two knockdowns in Round 10 with the referee calling a halt to the fight. Comparisons are being made with Manny Pacquiao but this does not appear to be bothering Ancajas who is impressing in his own right.

In Okinawa, Japan

Japanese star Diago Higa wasted no time dispatching Mexican Moises Fuentes in Okinawa. The home crowd did not have to wait long to see their man secure victory. Fuentes did actually land a coupe of shots early on but at 2 minutes 32 seconds Higa landed a clean left shot that took Fuentes to the canvas from which he did not recover. Higa moves to a record of 15-0, the only question mark is that all but one of his fights have been in Japan, but Higa is an exciting prospect to keep an eye on as his career continues.
