Super League Super 8’s – Round 1

ST Helens extended their winning streak to six with an impressive win to deny Warrington the chance of going top as the Super 8’s round kicked off. Tries from Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Johnny Lomax and Jordan Turner helped Saints to a 20-12 lead. A late try from Ryan Atkins gave Warrington hope but it was not enough. Hull could not take advantage top extend their lead at the top as Castleford produced a brilliant first half to take a 20-0 lead at the break and went on to win 30-16 with six tries including two from Ryan Hampshire and a 10 points including a try from Luke Gale.

Wigan recovered from their disappointing Challenge Cup Semi-Final loss with an eleven try demolition of Wakefield. George Williams and Sam Tomkins both went over twice in an easy 60-12 win to get their Super eight challenge off to a perfect start. The final game of the weekend saw a hat trick for Fouad Yaha as the Catalan Dragons comfortably saw off Widnes in a strong showing and excellent defence in their game in France. The Dragons ran out winners 26-10.

WIGAN WARRIORS 12 CATALAN DRAGONS 6

Wigan got off to a winning start thanks to two early tries on a miserable night at the DW Stadium. Michael McIlorum got the first try early on as Catalan failed to get to grips with the conditions and spilled the ball right on their own try line allowing McIllorum to take advantage and get the first score. He then got a second supporting a break from George Williams to add to the lead. Matty Smith added a conversion and a penalty to give Wigan a 12-0 lead. Justin Horo went over for the French side converted by former Wigan man Pat Richards who was making his debut for Catalan. However Wigan held out for the victory to start the season on a positive note.
