Afghanistan comprehensively take the series with big win

Afghanistan earned an historic away series win by thrashing Zimbabwe in the final contest. With the series at 2-2 most were hoping for an exciting contest but it was not to be. Afghanistan put 253 on the board with a 50 from Rahmat Shah backed up by Mohammad Nabi (48) and Noor Ali Zadran (46). Chris Mpofu continued his good bowling form taking three wickets but had no support this time. In reply Zimbabwe totally fell apart being bowled all out within just 14 overs for 53 and got nowhere near the revised target of 159 due to rain delays. Nabi after his stint with the bat took 3 wickets for just 14 proving himself a big game player and Afghanistan showing they are the top side of the second tier teams right now.

Economical bowling helps Afghanistan to victory

Tight bowling helped Afghanistan win the opening match of their series with Zimbabwe in a rain delayed encounter. The Afghan batting was not inspiring as they struggled to 215 with captain Asghar Stanikzai top scoring with 50 and the Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer the best of the bowlers with three wickets.. The Afghan bowling was excellent however with Golbadin Naib only losing 12 runs from his six overs and Amir Hazma only conceding 15 runs off his five overs. This discipline aided the visitors to the win as the rain came 28 overs into the Zimbabwe innings and they had only reached 99/4, behind the Dcukworth Lewis requirement. No further play was possible and as a result Afghanistan claimed the win by 12 runs on the Duckworth Lewis calculation to take the first of this five match series.

Afghans make short work of Ireland to claim Desert title

Afghanistan are the inaugural Desert T20 Champions for second tier nations after blowing away Ireland in Dubai. The Afghans only took 7.5 Overs tor each the target with Mohammad Shahzad scoring 52 Not out including nine fours and a six. Despite the disappointingly one sided final the tournament has been seen as a success and looks certain to be repeated.

ODI Game 5 – Ireland v Afghanistan

Ed Joyce’s second century of the series, hitting 160 not out including 4 sixes allowed Ireland to set a total Afghanistan could not reach and ensure this entertaining five day series ended level at 2-2. Gary Wilson supported with 58 to put a score of 265 on the board. Najibullah Zadran was the key man for Afghanistan batting well after a poor show from the top order and when his wicket was taken by Kevin O’Brien who kept the pressure on with 3 wickets in the innings, the visitors were then struggling to keep up with the run rate and fell 12 runs short of securing an historic away series win. The 2-2 draw was probably a fair reflection of the series

Game 4 – Opening stand for Zimbabwe sets up a decider

ZIMBABWE WIN BY 65 RUNS – SERIES LEVEL at 2-2

The first wicket stand between Peter Moor and  set up Zimbabwe towards victory in the 4th ODI in Sharjah. Chibhabha hit 53 and Moor 52 as Zimbabwe posted 226 for the Afghans to chase. The Afghan’s star batsman Mohammad Shahzad hit 45 but that was the only resistance as they were bowled all out for 161 in a second straight batting collapse. Neville Madziva took four wickets as the African side set up a decider leveling the series at 2-2.

Game 5 – Naib the hero as Afghanistan seal the series

AFGHANISTAN WIN BY 2 WiCKETS – AFGHANISTAN WIN THE SERIES 3-2

Zimabawe batting first put a good total on the board helped by 110 from Hamilton Masakazda, 42 from Peter Moor and 40 from Richmond Motumbami in a total of 248. Zimbabwe looked on top as the Afghans were 146-6 when Naib came in. However he timed the run chase perfectly hitting 82 not out including six sixes and steering Afghanistan to a 2 wicket victory with two balls to spare hitting a six to finish it off in style. The series win should further help the development of the game in Afghanistan in this ongoing remarkable story of hope from the war torn nation.

Washout in Nelson

The fourth game between New Zealand and Sri Lanka was abandoned after heavy rain at the Saxton Oval in Nelson. Sri Lanka had New Zealand in trouble at 75-3 before the rain came and washed out the game meaning the match was drawn and New Zealand now cannot lose the series as they lead 2-1 with just one more game left.

Afghan collapse puts Zimbabwe back in the series

A disastrous batting spell from Afghanistan put Zimbabwe back in their five match series in Sharjah. The Afghans led 2-0 going in and bowled reasonably well. Only Hamilton Masakadza with 83 and Graeme Cremer with 58 put up any serious resistance as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 175. Mirwais Ashraf was the best of the Afghan bowlers with figures of 3-20.

However the Afghans had a nightmare with the bat with only Mohammad Shahzad, the hero of the last game, reaching double figures. Luke Jongwe ripped through the Afghan lower order taking five wickets as Afghanistan were bowled out for just 58, putting Zimbabwe right back in the series with a huge boost of confidence going into game 4.

South Africa V England – Test Match

Solid batting the key to England win

England strike first blood in their test series with South Africa after rock solid batting performances from Nick Compton, James Taylor and Johny Bairstow ensured sufficient runs on the board to build pressure that South Africa could not find a reply to. Compton top scored in the first innings with 81 assisted by Taylor with 70 and Bairstow 41 to put 303 on the board. Despite a fine 118 from Dean Elgar South Africa could only reply with 214 with Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali taking four wickets a piece to establish a solid first innings lead for the visitors.

Bairstow top scored in the second innings with 79 with Joe Root adding 72 and Compton 49 as England piled on 326 in the second innings leaving South Africa requiring a mammoth total to win. They got nowhere near as four wickets from Steven Finn tore the heart out of the South African batting and sealing a comfortable 241 run win

Afghanistan V Zimbabwe – ODI

Shahzad century sees the Afghans home

In an excellent game of cricket in Sharjah, UAE the Zimbabwe side batted first with Peter Moor getting the Africans off to a great start with a half century. This was followed up by a fine 73 from Craig Ervine to put a very respectable 253 for Afghanistan to chase. And chase it they did, mainly thanks to an excellent 131 not out by Mohammad Shahzad who led the run chase to perfection and found enough support to see the Afghans home with 14 balls to spare and take a 2-0 lead in the One Day series.
