Woakes holds his nerve to bowl England to victory

In a thrilling final one day international in the series Chris Woakes came back from a poor start to the key final over to help England avoid a series whitewash and claim their first win over India at any level on their current tour. England batted first with Jason Roy top scoring with 65 supported by Ben Stokes who was unbeaten on 57 as England posted 331. Nobody went on to get a big score once again and on a good pitch maybe they would end up just short again as a result? It looked that way going into the final over as Kedar Jadhav hit 10 off the first two balls being bowled by Woakes to move his own score to 90. It left India needing just 6 off the final four balls. Woakes held steady however to bowl two dot balls and then got the crucial wicket as Jadhav was caught by Sam Billings. India could only score one off the final ball as Woakes had turned a certain defeat into victory for England in a huge final test of character that he came through with flying colours.

Warner ton sets up Series win for Australia

Australia have claimed the series with a game to spare after a comfortable 86 run win over Pakistan in Sydney. A score of 130 from David Warner including two sixes set the tone, Warner was backed up by Glenn Maxwell (78) and Travis Head (51) enabling to post a score of 353. Hasan Ali took five of the six Australian wickets and had he had some back up it may have been a different story, but it wasn’t. In reply Pakistan were quickly in trouble as Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa took three wickets each as Pakistan were all out for just 267. Australia will be favourites to close this out going into the 5th and final match.

Power batting sets up Australia to take the Whitewash

Three first innings centuries from Matt Renshaw, David Warner and Peter Handscombe enabled Australia to put a dominant 538 on the board taking advantage of the best of the batting time that left Pakistan chasing. Younis Khan’s class 175 not out was not enough to stop Australia taking a 200 plus first innings lead helped by Josh Hazlewood’s four wicket haul. The home side then added a high speed 241 batting Pakistan totally out of the game. Hazlewood took 3 more wickets in the second innings as Pakistan got nowhere near their target. The win means Australia take the series by a whitewash 3-0 scoreline.

ODI Game 5 – Sri Lanka v Australia

Australia completed their one day series victory over Sri Lanka with a 5 wicket win in Pallekele. Sri Lanka batted first with nobody getting past the thirties. Danushka Gunathilaka top scored with a mere 39 as Mitchell Starc took 3 Wickets restricting the hosts to just 195. Opener David Warner’s century ensured the Aussies were on top from the start. He eventually was out for 106. Despite three wickets for Dilruwan Perera the Sri Lankan’s never put enough pressure on as Australia coasted home with seven overs to spare and take a 4-1 series win which turns around their poor Test showing in which they were whitewashed. It appears their grasp of the Asian conditions came too late for the Test Series but just in time to command the one day contests.

Rangana Herath took 13 wickets in the match including 7 wickets in the key second innings helping Sri Lanka whitewash Australia 3-0 in the series. The first innings suggested a good tight contest, Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva getting Centuries for Sri Lanka with Shaun Marsh and and Steve Smith responding for Australia to give the visitors a small 24 run lead. Kaushaul Silva hit 115 while de Silva’s 65 Not Out put the pressure on Australia setting a target of 324 to win. With a pitch increasingly friendly to the spin of Herath, the Green and Gold’s got nowhere near the target being bowled out for 160. Only David Warner with 68 put up any sort of resistance, but it was Herath’s day and series as Australia never coped with the conditions throughout.

Hales and Butler see England to victory

ENGLAND WIN BY 5 WICKETS – ENGLAND LEAD THE SERIES 2-0

Economical bowling and fine knocks from Alex Hales and Jos Butler helped England take a 2-0 lead in their one day series at Port Elizabeth. South Africa batted first with AB De Villers top scoring with 73, England’s bowling kept the runs down however with Reece Topley taking 4 wickets plus Adil Rasheed and Moeen Ali bowling a full 10 overs going for less than five runs an over restricting South Africa to 262-7 off the 50 overs

The Africans never had enough runs on the board and a well paced 99 from opener Alex Hales led England to a strong position. When he finally fell just short of his century it was left to Jos Bulter with 42 not out and Moeen Ali supporting with 21 Not Out to see England home with 22 balls to spare. Kyle Abbott took 3 wickets for South Africa but they simply did not have enough runs on the board and after losing the test series, look to be facing defeat in the ODI series as well being two down with three to play.

Warner and Marsh chase down 283 to set up decider

AUSTRALIA WIN BY 4 WICKETS – SERIES TIED 1-1

Australia hit back in their one day series with New Zealand winning the second game in Wellington to set up a decider. New Zealand batting first saw a lot of batsman get in but nobody kicked on to a big score. Kane Williamson top scored with 60 and Michell Santner has a good game with bat and ball scoring 45 Not Out to see New Zealand finish on 281-9. Josh Hazelwood took three wickets and was the best of a strong performing bowling unit.

In reply despite Santner taking 3 wickets to try and keep some pressure on, an opening partnership of 122 between David Warner and Usman Khawaja put Austrlaia in a strong position the never relinquished. Khawaja hit 50 and Warner went on to fall short of a century with 98. A fine 69 Not Out from Mitchell Marsh rammed home the advantage and ensured Australia got home with 21 balls left. The two best One Day sides in the world now head to a 3rd and deciding game in Hamilton on Monday (Australian time)

Pandey helps India avoid shut out

INDIA WIN BY 6 WICKETS – AUSTRALIA WIN THE SERIES 4-1

Power batting from India including a well timed century from Manish Pandey stpped Australia taking a shut out series win in Sydney. In another pitch with little for the bowlers, Australia batted first and post a target of 330 with centuries for David Warner who hit 3 sixes in his 122, and Mitchell Marsh with 102. Unusually however Australia lost a couple of wickets early on stopping meaning a degree more caution was required than normal, and as a result they did not have quite enough on the board.

In reply India’s openers put 124 on the board for the first wicket. Rohit Sharma fell just short of a century with 99 and Shikhar Dhawan hit 78. Sharma’s departure brought Pandey to the crease who timed the run chase to perfection scoring 104 not out and seeing India home with four balls to spare. John Hastings bowled well taking three of the four wickets but on this occasion it was not enough. India take some confidence into the rest of the tour with their first victory win in a series dominated by the bat. Australia still win the series and remain easily the best one day side in the world.

Richardson bowling spell edges Australia closer to the whitewash

AUSTRALIA WIN BY 25 RUNS – AUSTRALIA LEAD THE SERIES 4-0

An opening stand between Aaron Finch and David Warner, coupled with a fine bowling spell from Kane Richardson helped Australia take a 4-0 lead in their one day series against India in Canberra. For the first time this series Australia batted first and Finch and Warner put on 187 for the first wicket with Finch adding another century with 107 and Warner hitting 93. Steady contributions from Steven Smith with 51 and Glenn Maxwell with 47 added to the runs allowing Australia to post a total of 348. Ishant Sharma was the best of India’s bowlers taking four wickets but was expensive going for 77 runs in his 10 overs.

In reply Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli both put centuries on the board to keep the Indians in the run chase early on. It was Kane Richardson who broke the partnership getting Kohli caught on 106 and Dhawan went soon after for 126. The remainder of the Indian batting line up collapsed including a duck for captain MS Dohni as Richardson took five wickets coasting through the lower Indian order who lost their last six wickets for a mere 45 runs. Mitchell Marsh took the final wicket to see Australia home to s 25 run victory and take a 4-0 lead in the series with one game to go.

AFGHANISTAN WIN BY 2 WiCKETS – AFGHANISTAN WIN THE SERIES 3-2

Zimbabwe looked on top as the Afghans were 146-6 when Naib came in. However he timed the run chase perfectly hitting 82 not out including six sixes and steering Afghanistan to a 2 wicket victory with two balls to spare hitting a six to finish it off in style. The series win should further help the development of the game in Afghanistan in this ongoing remarkable story of hope from the war torn nation.

CRICKET – England take a 2-1 lead

England came back from the heavy defeat at Lords to regain the initiative in the 3rd Ashes Test against Australia. Australia decided to bat after winning the toss in overcast conditions and the decision backfired after superb bowling from Jimmy Anderson set up England’s win taking six wickets. Only Chris Rogers offered any resistance with 52 as the Aussies were bowled out for 132. England struggled with the bat to start with but stead innings from Ian Bell, now batting at number three, as well as in form Joe Root and Moeen Ali who all got half centuries steered England to 281 and a good lead.

The Australians collapsed to seven wickets down and were staring at a two day defeat. David Warner and Peter Nevill saw Ausrtralia through the end of the day and supported by a good inning from Mitchell Starc they at least gave England a total of 123 to chase. After an early wicket, Ian Bell with 65 not out drove England home to a clear 8 wicket win to take a 2-1 lead into next week at Trent Bridge, a ground which normally favours England’s swing bowlers.

BOXING – Jacobs defends Middleweight title

Middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs defeated Californian Sergio Mora in Brooklyn New York. Jacobs dominated the opening rounds and knocked Mora down in the 2nd round. Although Mora got up at the end of the round the medical staff diagnosed an ankle injury and deemed it not safe for Mora to continue. On the same card conqueror of Amir Khan, Danny Garcia defeated Paulie Malignaggi to put himself back into title contention. Elsewhere in Hull British olympic champion Luke Campbell defeated Tommy Coyle in 10 rounds in a Lightweight eliminator which could set him up for a World title shot later in the year.

RUGBY LEAGUE – Leeds to meet Hull KR in the Challenge Cup Final

Leeds will play Hull Kingston Rovers in the Final of the Challenge Cup at the end of August. Leeds saw off ST Helens in the battle of Super League’s top 2 in Warrington. Leeds stretched to an 18-4 lead after an excellent try to cap a fine performance by veteran Jamie Peacock. Two tries from Mark Percival brought Saints within four but Kallum Watkins late try sealed the victory and saw Leeds heading back to Wembley.

The Second Semi-Final at Headingley Saw favourites Warrington take the lead and dominate the early stages. However Hull’s defense with key tackles from Ken Sio and Paul Walker ensured the Humbersiders held firm as they began to get a foothold into the match. Josh Mantellato scored and converted his own try to level it up and Mantellato produced a perfect kick that was brilliantly taken by Ken Sio who ran 30 yards to score and give Hull KR the lead at half time. Hull dominated the early part of the second half and and another try from Kevin Larroyer with a penalty from Mantellato gave Hull KR a 20-4 lead. As in the other semi though, it was not over. Richie Myler produced 10 minutes of magic scoring a try and setting up Ben Currie for a second to bring Warrington within 2 points. In the final moments as both sides tried to find the key score, Gary Lunt went over for Hull K R to seal the upset victory as they look for their first Challenge Cup win since 1980.

CYCLING – Italian’s dominate Women’s race,

The women took to the London stage first in the Ride London Grand prix. Sadly the race was disrupted by a crash at the start of the final lap leaving a number of leading contenders out of the race. The course looped around St Jame’s Park area of London and is scheduled to become an annual event. Italian Barbara Guarischi beat American Shelly Olds in a sprint finish with another Italian Annalise Cucinotta finishing third. British hopeful Katie Archibald and Laura Trott finished 6th and 8th respectively.

In the men’s Ride London-Surrey Classic a breakway that the main peleton had no interest in chasing meant home favourites Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish were well out of contention in the final stages. British hopes then rested with Ben Swift who had gone with the breakaway and had finished 2nd in the race last year. However in the sprint finish Jean Pierre Drucker of Luxembourg timed his finish to perfection to win the race and by the first winner from Luxembourg of a major race on British soil. Swift in the end finished third.
