Eight wickets for Southee as Bangladesh collapse

New Zealand have wrapped up a 2-0 series win with a comfortable 9 Wicket win in Christchurch. Bangladesh batted first posting 289 with Soumya Sarker top scoring on 89, Tim Southee took five wickets and Trent Boult four to ensure a 300 plus score was not on the cards. In reply New Zealand move in front as Henry Nichols fell just short of his century falling on 98 in a total of 354. Bangladesh second innings was a sense of deja vu as they collapsed as they did in the first test being bowled out for just 173 as Southee took three more wickets for a total of eight in the game.Needing just 111 to win, Tom Latham with 41 not out steered New Zealand home for the loss of just one wicket showing yet again how tough to beat the Black Caps are on home soil.

South Africa secure whitewash with an inning thrashing of Sri Lanka

South Africa secured a 3-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka with an emphatic victory by an innings and 118 runs in Johannesburg. South Africa batted first with Jean Paul-Duminy (155) and Hashim Amla (134) helping South Africa to a total of 426. They then skittled out Sri Lanka for just 131 with Vernon Philander taking 3 wickets for just 28 runs. In a move used less often these days South Africa enforced the follow on ruthlessly exploiting their opponents lack of confidence. Only Dimuth Karunaratne with 50 put up any resistance as South Africa coasted to victory with Wayne Parnell taking four wickets to finish the series in style.

Williamson guides New Zealand to victory in run fest

New Zealand secured an extraordinary victory against Bangladesh despite the visitors putting a huge total of 595 on the board. Shakib Al Hasan with 217 and Mushfiqur Rahim with 159 were the catalyst for the huge opening score. New Zealand hit back however, Tom Latham hit 177 and Mitchell Santner supported with 73 as New Zealand scored 539 to put themselves back in contention. Bangladesh then collapsed in their second innings bowled out for 160 with Trent Boult taking three wickets. This gave New Zealand the chance of what looked an unlikely victory and Kane Williamson with a fine 104 not out led the way with support from Ross Taylor (60) to eventually coast home with seven wickets to spare

Williamson spell delivers the win in low scoring game in Nelson

On a tough pitch to score on Neil Broom’s 109 and a fine spell of 3-22 by Kane Williamson was the key difference to help New Zealand claim their series win against Bangladesh with a game to go. New Zealand could only put 250 on the board but tight bowling ensurined Bangladesh never came near claiming victory and Williamson’s three wickets at key moments stopped the tourists from building any momentum. New Zeland claim the win by 66 runs.

1st Test Match – Sri Lanka v Australia

When Sri Lanka were skittled out for merely 117 with 3 wickets from Josh Hazelwood and Nathan Lyon, a victory for Sri Lanka looked unlikely. However they fought back restricting the Aussies to 203 with Adam Voges top scoring with 47 with 4 wickets each for Rangana Herath and Lakshan Sandakan keeping Sri Lanka in the game.

The key was a superb innings of 176 from Kusal Mendis. to give Australia a target of 267 to win. They never got close, Steven Smith’s 54 was the only resistance as the capitulated to the pitch where spin was increasingly winning the day. Herath took another 5 wickets and Sri Lanka sealed a hugely impressive 106 run win.

1st Test Match – Zimbabwe v New Zealand

New Zealand easily took the first match of the series in Bulawayo against Zimbabwe. The hosts position would have been worse had it not been for tailender Donald Tiripano’s 49 not out to at least put 161 on the board with Neil Wagner taking 6 wickets. A masterclass of batting leading to three centuries Ross Taylor 173 not out, BJ Watling 107 and Tom Latham 105 enabled New Zealand to end with 576 on the board. Sean Williams got an impressive 119 to try and keep the African side in the game but in the end 4 wickets for Trent Boult ensured they got nowhere near forcing New Zealand to bat again.

ODI Series – South Africa v England (Games 4 & 5)

Game 4

Rabada wickets keeps series alive

SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 1 WICKET – SERIES TIED 2-2

Not completing the 50 overs cost England dear in a tight game Johannesburg. South Africa put England into bat and England started well with Alex Hales hitting 50 and Joe Root got another excellent century with 109. The rest of the middle order collapsed however and only a late partnership between Chris Woakes (33) and Adil Rashid (39) salvaged any kind of score. However England were bowled all out 19 balls short of the 50 overs with Kagiso Rabada taking 4 wickets in an excellent bowling spell.

Although nobody put a big individual score on the board for the Africans in reply, everyone did enough to keep them in command of the run chase. A key 62 from Chris Morris when the game looked on a knife edge helped the South African cause as those extra balls England lost meant they did not have enough to defend. When Morris went with the scores level it was left to the tailenders Kyle Abbott and Imran Tahir to avoid the draw, Tahir did so with a four to level the series and set up a decider.

Game 5

De Villiers the key as South Africa complete series comeback

SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 5 WICKETS – SOUTH AFRICA WIN THE SERIES 3-2

With the momentum of having come back from 2-0 down, South African confidence carried them through to an unlikely series victory against England in Cape Town. England batted poorly for the second game in a row. Despite Alex Hales 112, nobody else got into the thirties. Kagiso Rabada got another 3 wickets helping keep the pressure as England could only score 236 and were all out with 5 overs to spare.

The total was never going to be enough despite the best efforts of Reece Topley who took three wickets. Opener Hashim Amla hit 59 but it was AB De Villiers who broke the game open with 101 not out, hitting the winning runs to boot. He hit 11 fours and a six in his crucial innings supported by David Wiese with 41 not out. The England collapse in this series will be of concern to England who looked to be finding some one day form. By contrast South Africa who were outplayed in the test series, end the one day series back on a high note.

Test Series – New Zealand v Australia (Game 1)

Voges hits double century as Aussies thrash New Zealand

AUSTRALIA WIN BY AN INNINGS AND 52 RUNS – AUSTRALIA LEAD THE SERIES 1-0

After New Zealand taking the one day series Australia hit back in the first of two tests by racking up a huge win in Wellington. Australia were vindicated in their decision to force New Zealand to bat first with a superb bowling display from Mark Hazlewood with four wickets and Peter Siddle with three. New Zealand were rocking on 97-7 when Mark Craig came in and his 41 not out was the only score of note which salvaged something as they ended all out for just 183.

Australia put the game totally beyond their opponents by posting 562. Adam Voges hit 30 fours and three sixes in his mammoth 239 supported by Usman Khawaja with 140 and Steven Smith with 71. Peter Siddle fell just short of a half century with 49 to add to the pain for New Zealand.

New Zealand needed 379 just to make Australia bat again and while they made a better fist of their second innings, they could not get there. Opener Tom Latham top scored with 63 and there were decent knocks from Henry Nicholls (59) and Tim Southee (48) but nobody could make the big score that was required. Nathan Lyon took four second innings wickets as Australia finished the batting line up off for 327 to take an innings win and the lead in the series, which they cannot lose as there is only one more test to come.
