League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg – Liverpool v Southampton

Liverpool crash out after dogged Saints display

Liverpool’s recent poor form continued falling to a second consecutive home defeat as Southampton reached the League Cup Final. Emre Can had Liverpool’s best effort which was clawed off the line but the Reds overall created little as Southampton defended well throughout. The Saints won the game in injury time with substitute Shane Long finishing off a counter attack to seal the tie and send the south coast club to Wembley. Liverpool now have just one win in seven games and notably only have the one win against League Two Plymouth since Sadio Mane went to the African Cup of Nations.

Forest Lose

Leeds move up to third with win

Leeds United move up to third in the Championship with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Forest had the best chance of the first half through Britt Assombalonga forcing a fine save from Robert Greed. Leeds took control in the second half. A close range finish from Chris Wood, his 20th goal of the season gave Leeds the lead. Souleymane Doukara’s 20 yard volley sealed the points for the Yorkshiremen. For Forest who had improved in recent games, this was a step up in class too far for where the side is right now.

Leicester hammered at St Mary’s

Champions Leicester City are still winless away from home this season after a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Southampton. James Ward Prowse got his first league goal of the season to put the Saints 1-0 up and his free kick set up Jay Rodriguez to make it two. A late penalty from Dusan Tadic made it 3-0 for a scoreline that was a fair reflection of the game. The win builds confidence for Southampton who will fancy their chances in the League Cup 2nd leg against a currently shaky Liverpool side. Leicester need some points soon to avoid being dragged into a relegation fight.

League Cup Semi Final 1st Leg – Southampton v Liverpool

losekop

Saints come marching half way in

Liverpool are fortunate still to be in the Semi-Final tie after losing their 1st leg League Cup Semi Final 1-0 at Southampton. Roberto Firmino’s early effort was pretty much all Liverpool could muster as Jay Rodriguez put Nathan Redmond through to score the only goal on 22 minutes. Redmond has two other big chances as Rodriguez and defender Virgil Van Dijk had big games. Rodriguez was everywhere and Van Dijk kept Daniel Sturridge quiet throughout.

Despite this Southampton could have put this tie away but have not and Liverpool will still have a strong chance only one behind back at Anfield. It is still a second straight poor performance without a goal from Liverpool however and with an in form Manchester United at Old Trafford up next, it does not get any easier. Liverpool also have the 2nd leg and the FA Cup replay with Plymouth also still to come later this month. The second leg of this tie will be on Wednesday 25th January.

It is now two clean sheet in a row for Leicester, something to build on moving forward.

ODI Game 1 – England v Pakistan

England were well on their way to victory before the rain intervened and the hosts were awarded victory over Pakistan on the Duckworth-Lewis method. Opener Azhar Ali top scored with 82 as Pakistan put 260 on the board. England were well ahead of the run rate with Jason Roy hitting 65 and Joe Root 61. As the game stopped, England were well set on 194-3 with Eoin Morgan looking good with 33 not out. The calculation gave England a 44 run win in a game England would surely have gone on to win had it continued.

ODI Game 2

England made it 2-0 as they impressively chased down a target of 251 at Lords. Sarfarz Ahmed got a century for Pakistan who batted first and Imad Wasim was not out on 63 but ran out of partners as their score always looked short with Chrs Woakes taking three wickets. A 112 partnership between Joe Root (89) and Eoin Morgan (68) put England in pole position and Moeen Ali with 21 Not Out was there with Woakes at the end to see England home with 15 balls to spare.

Premier League

Romelu Lukaku tore Southampton apart at ST Mary’s this afternoon scoring two goals to help Everton to a comfortable 3-0 away win. A fine curling strike from Ross Barclay completed the fine victory away from home for the toffee’s in a dominant display in which Belgian Lukaku reminded everyone why he is one of the top strikers around.

Two on form sides met up Upton park and it was Caludio Ranieri’s Leicester City who took the points to keep their unebaten start going. It was Asia and Africa combining with the goals, Japan’s Shinji Okazaki opened the scoring and Algerian Riyad Mahrez made it two with a powerful strike to make it 2-0. Dimitri Payet got one back for West Ham and Diafra Sakho had a chance to equalise but the effort was well saved by Leicester keeper Kasper Schmiechel to keep Leicester ahead  and earn the points

Championship

Despite dominating the game Derby County failed to find a winner to take three points at home to Charlton Athletic. Tony Watt gave the visitors the lead with a deflected shot. The latics defended for most of the game Chris Martin, Tom Ince and Jeff Hendrick all missed chances. It was Martin who got the equaliser for Derby, who also had a chance to win it in injury time, keeper Nick Pope made the save from a header to earn Charlton a point.

Nottingham Forest came from behind to get their first points of the season against Rotherham. Danny Collins gave Rotherham a deserved early lead but the key moment came just before half-time when Matt Mills equalised from a Jamie Ward cross. With the momentum, Forest controlled the second half with the winner, probably inevitably, coming from Michail Antonio from close range. Antonio has been very impressive and will be key to Forest’s hopes this season.

League 1

Blackpool remain without a win this season after being comfortably defeated by Rochdale 2-0. Donal McDermott gave Rochdale the lead just before the hour. With Blackpool pushing for the equaliser, Rochdale struck again four minutes from time as Ian Henderson got a second from close range to secure the points.

League 2

The form book went out the window in the Nottinghamshire Derby at Meadow Lane on Friday night. Notts County went into the game bang in form but were surprisingly lackluster as Mansfield Town dominated the game and came out with a surprise but deserved victory. Matt Green put Chris Clements through to give the stage a half-time lead. Ryan Tafazoll made it to with a header from a free-kick with 10 minutes to go to complete probably Mansfield’s best performance since returning to the Football League.

An injury time equaliser from Stevenage defender Mark Hughes cost Newport County the three points at Rodney Parade. Dipo Akinyemi finished off a fine counter attack to give the visitors the lead. However Newport improved in the second half and turned it around with goals from Aaron Collins before Scott Boden to lead 2-1. Hughes header ensured Newport could not hold on and give Teddy Sheringham’s side a point.

National League

Both Tranmere Rovers and Chester City were held to 0-0 draws by Braintree Town and Dover respectively. The Tranmere game was dull with only one shot on target in the whole 90 minutes. Dover could have had the three points at home to Chester but keeper Jon Worsnop had a fine game making key saves to gain Chester an away point.

Cheltenham Town got their first win of the season with an easy victory against struggling Southport. After a tight first half Aaron Downes gave Cheltenham the lead with a header and from then on the home side dominated. Two further goals from Amari Morgan-Smith gave Cheltenham a 3-0 win in the end and Southport only have one point and may well be looking at a long relegation battle on current form.

Scotland

Queen Of The South dominated most of the game at Livingston but found breaking down a tight defense hard work. After a goalless first half it was Lewis Kidd who broke the deadlock with a long range strike from 25 yards. Derek Lyle missed chances to make the game safe but Livingston offered little going forward and Queens ended up taking the 3 points 1-0
